Tyler Gaffney might not make Patriots' 53?

The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe is "still not convinced" Tyler Gaffney will make the Patriots' 53-man roster.

We won't find out for sure until this weekend, and even after that it's possible Gaffney could be cut for a waiver claim. "I could also see a scenario where Gaffney makes the initial 53 but Pats like someone better on the waiver wire and make a midweek change," wrote Howe. Gaffney worked with the first-team offense in the regular season dress rehearsal, but his skills are somewhat redundant with LeGarrette Blount's. Howe seems to think Gaffney is the 52nd or 53rd player on the Patriots' roster.

So, Gaffney would actually have to be cut, but if he is, should we put in a waiver claim for him at the expense of one of ours? It's a little crazy to base things off of one game, but Gaffney didn't look too bad out there last Friday, so at least we should take that into consideration.  He also obviously has a skill set that caught Getty's attention when he drafted him. And, if his skills truly are redundant with Blounts, then perhaps that would mean he could be an heir apparent to Tugboat. 

What about a trade scenario?

The full-circle angle is just something interesting to ponder.

Well if hes not good enough for the Pats I doubt he'd be good enough for us. Id much rather have CAP and Fozzy than CAP and Gaffney.

He definitely wouldn't be an "heir apparent" to Tolbert.  He's just another running back.  Nothing special.

so he wasnt good enough to make the panthers 53 and was trying to be put on the practice squad but got snatched by the patriots only to be cut from them.  Explain to me why Carolina would sign him immediately?

The writer suggests that it's not about being good enough, but that they may not need Gaffney in light of Blount.

Actually, they could probably use a cat like Fozzy, with Doing Lewis on ice.

I would think that Wegher can play Fozzy's role for us, but I noticed that you didn't mention him.

Gaffney is a power back. He was that even in college .

If he wasn't drafted by the Panthers would you even know who the hell he was? Just one of the many average at best running backs on the roster bubble at this point . Move on.

That's not what happened. He hurt his knee and we were trying to IR him. He had to clear waivers first and the Patriots claimed him.

Well, I am sure people said the same thing about Tolbert. He's a fan favorite, great big teddy bear with surprisingly nimble feet, but he's not gonna last forever. He is one of a kind, but Gaffney is roughly 6'1" and 230 lbs. He can catch, and he runs the ball with power. He wasn't a bad blocker in school either. These are the same reasons why Gettleman drafted him in the first place. I am not going to be so dismissive.
