You're assuming that they're looking for a vet to start. When did RR or Gettleman ever say that? I guess I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're just looking for depth. If they were looking for a starter then why wait until now and why sign a guy who didn't even play football last year?

Maybe because they were going to give Boston a real chance to show growth this 3rd camp.  I mean vets get jobs about this time because guys teams want to step up don't.

Kelvin didn't play last year.  Every roster has guys that missed last season.   All that matters is where you at today.

I'm not sure it will happen week 1 but my stance all offseason has been with DBs that young Carolina simply was going to have to add a vet S to be on the field.  Boston would make more since if we had vet DBs and then they could try to help him.  But the investment now is a DB....and S play impacts that DB investment IMO

Like Moorgan pointed out, this is only Boston's 3rd year in the league. He's obviously still learning the pro game. UNC didn't do him any favors by changing DC's so often and forcing him to switch positions about 5 different times either.

I get it. That's why I said, "We should see marked evidence of his maturation and evolution this season."

This season will likely be the one that determines whether he's really starting material.

I think sort of the opposite about Boston. I think he uses and trusts his instincts all the time. He just doesn't have great instincts. It's why he is so hit or miss in coverage. Makes a big play when he gets it right and gives up a big play when he gets it wrong. He just gets it wrong more often than you would like from a safety. He might just be better off being reactionary since he's got enough athleticism to do so.

Interesting perspective. The only thing is,  I'm not too sure a reactionary player only can ever really be good, much less great, at any position. Athleticism will only take you so far.

Stevie Brown didn't just miss the season though. He was completely out of football last year and it wasn't because of an injury. There is no way in hell he is taking Boston's place. I don't understand why this is even a debate.

Agreed, but I don't think Boston's ceiling is any higher than just good starter and at the safety position I'd prefer above average but dependable(basically Roman Harper) over makes big some big plays but also gets torched fairly often.

I can agree to that.

Your use of the term "torched" elicited bad mental pictures in the backfield though. Tre has got to know what he's doing back there for this to work. Stevie Brown? The dude is such a huge question mark now. I'd have rather signed Hitner because he sounds much more closer to the "above average but dependable" player that you referenced. I believe he would have pushed Tre, if not outright taken his job. But, like I said, the jury is still out. For me, guarded optimism is in order, but I am prepared to pull the flag of pessimism out of my pocket at a moment's notice if things begin to go south in a hurry. That's not only in regards to Tre Boston, but for anyone back there not named Coleman.

I don't think Stevie Brown survives the cut to 53 on Saturday. I think both he and Marlowe get cut. Marlowe will then be signed to the practice squad.

We will go with Coleman, Boston, Ball and Colin Jones as our safeties.

No
