Panthers Sign Safety Stevie Brown

I think the jury is still out on Boston. Sure he makes some great plays, but he also makes boneheaded mistakes.

I could be wrong, but Boston seems to play more reactionary than instinctively a good amount of the time. I don't know whether he's as academic about the position as I'd like, but he kind of covers that up with his hustle and aggression. It appears to me like he's too aggressive at times, and loses his fundamentals as a result. That being said, sometimes the good outweighs the bad.  In will anxiously await and see what happens. We should see marked evidence of his maturation and evolution this season.

I love Tre, but I'm not so sure the Getts or Rivera do.  Otherwise, why sign two veteran safeties?

Regardless, I love this signing a lot more than Major Wright...  I remember watching Brown back in 2012 with NYG after we let him go and was so pissed that we missed out on him, all while we were struggling through the Nakamura error, errr, I mean era...  He was an INT machine and an absolute playmaker that year and looked like one of the best safeties in the league...  super rangy.  But, then I also was watching their game when he blew his knee out, and I don't think he's ever found the same form since.  I certainly hope he does here in his second stint with us.

Lol blaming some big anti unc conspiracy for hating tre Boston.

Boston has shown nothing since he's been here when given playing time. Lack of more playing time is evidence he's not impressing anyone in practice, not that he's some X factor the coaches are sitting on.

If anything him being from unc causes people on here to lose their poo defending him. The panthers could dig up Keldorf and we'd have threads calling for him to start over cam.

You idiots are worse than falcons fans with former UGA players. Without looking, I'm guessing there are at least two Aaron Murray threads there right now.

What do you mean lack of playing time shows he's not impressing anybody in practice? He's the starting SS  right now. Gentleman is not signing anybody to replace him. That's just in your own head. There's your conspiracy theory.

I think sort of the opposite about Boston. I think he uses and trusts his instincts all the time. He just doesn't have great instincts. It's why he is so hit or miss in coverage. Makes a big play when he gets it right and gives up a big play when he gets it wrong. He just gets it wrong more often than you would like from a safety. He might just be better off being reactionary since he's got enough athleticism to do so.

Like Moorgan pointed out, this is only Boston's 3rd year in the league. He's obviously still learning the pro game. UNC didn't do him any favors by changing DC's so often and forcing him to switch positions about 5 different times either.

He is now entering his 3r year with all the same staff.

last 2 years he didn't show much....one could assume with the scramble to find a vet he still hasn't shown enough in this 3rd camp.  We are even less experienced at DB than S and the focus is on Tre's spot

You're assuming that they're looking for a vet to start. When did RR or Gettleman ever say that? I guess I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're just looking for depth. If they were looking for a starter then why wait until now and why sign a guy who didn't even play football last year?

They're "scrambling" to find a vet bc if one of our starters go down we are up the creek. It is not to replace Tre. Y'all need to get off of Tre's nuts. He is going to be just fine and will make many more plays than Roman Harper did. We cannot have a pro bowler at every single position ya know.

For the record, it seems that Panthers.com agrees with me...http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Panthers-sign-safety-Stevie-Brown/7ec7abb5-084d-4ba6-b063-f31543ac3ba1

The Panthers need depth at safety behind starters  Kurt Colemanicon-article-link.gif  and  Tre Bostonicon-article-link.gif  in light of several injuries at the position that forced linebacker  Brian Blechenicon-article-link.gif  to help fill in during the Panthers' last preseason game. Trenton Robinson was released with a pectoral injury Tuesday, and  Dean Marloweicon-article-link.gif  remains out of action with a hamstring injury.  Marcus Ballicon-article-link.gif and  Travell Dixonicon-article-link.gif  recently returned to practice.

Quinton Mikell signed a week before the season in 2013 and started week 1 for us right

I don't think Boston is a lock to start, we might be suprised who starts opposite Coleman

Charles Godfrey was the best safety on the roster before they signed Mikell. Apples and oranges.
