Panthers History with 4th Rounders

Since there is so much consternation over the Panthers trading a 2018 draft pick for Andy Lee (and getting a 2017 7th Rounder), I decided to research and see what we are potentially missing out on based on our history.  In short, hide the kids, cause this is ugly...

 

1995- (Center) Frank Garcia: Inaugural pick was actually one of the better picks and now a host on WFNZ 610.  Average player, which puts him way above the norm on this year.

1996- (Guard) Norberto Garrido: All I remember about him was that he supposedly punched Kerry Collins for being a racist

1997- (Defensive End)- Tarek Saleh: Lasted one year with Panthers (don't remember and had to look up)

1998- (Wide Receiver)- Donald Hayes: Probably the best 4th Rounder in team history, which is saying something since he had one good year (2000) and was only with the team 3 seasons

1999- (Linebacker)- Hannibal Navies: Nondescript 3 seasons with Panthers.  Mainly remember him breaking Smitty leg in the MNF opener in 2004 when he was with Packers

2000- (Defensive Tackle)- Alvin McKinley- Only 1 season with Panthers (again had to look up b/c I don't really remember)

2001- (Quarterback) Chris Weinke: Former Heisman winner fell into a bad situation (much like Pickles although he was better) and never recovered.  My biggest memory of Weinke was the 2006 Wildcat game where we beat Atlanta and he had like 10 pass attempts.  Surprisingly had a cult following through much of the Delhomme years who were vocal that he just needed a chance.  Has decent career now as QB coach.

2002- (Defensive Back) Dante Wesley: Decent career as a Panther.  Backup DB and ST.  I mostly remember him from a story about my wife's friend at a former job banging him in an elevator.

2003- (Safety) Colin Branch: Hyped up for several years but never anything but average.  I seem to recall him costing us a fumble recovery after inadvertently knocking a ball out of bounds while he was playing with a cast.

2005- (Quarterback): Stefan LeFors: Plan was to groom him to be Jake Delhomme 2.0.  That plan lasted exactly one year.  Would be the highest draft pick spent on a QB in the Fox Era until Pickles (which obviously wasn't his call).

2006- (Safety): Nate Salley: Colin Branch, rinse, wash, repeat.

2007- (Wide Receiver): Ryne Robinson.  Preseason Legend.  Replaced after 1 season by another preseason legend, Kenny Moore.

2009- (Running Back) Mike Goodson & (Fullback) Tony Fiametta:  Goodson was drafted to be the 3rd RB behind Double Trouble, and he had some good games (when he wasn't fumbling or being a head case).  Fiametta was supposed to replace Hoover but he didn't live up to it plus we went away from our emphasis on having a FB (also had concussion issues).

2011- (Cornerback) Brandon Hogan:  Tore his ACL at WVU before draft.  Was projected to be 1st/2nd Rounder and we took a flyer on him.  Never recovered or really contributed.  Man, that 2011 class really was brutal outside of Cam Newton.

2012- (Defensive End) Frank Alexander & (Wide Receiver): Joe Adams:  Welp...

2013- (Guard): Edmund Kugbila: Welp... (Even Gettlemagic hasn't been able to completely conquer the curse of the 4th Round)

2014- (Safety) Tre Boston: Jury's out...  already contributed as much as lot of our 4th rounders and won't take much to move up further on this list...

2015- (Tackle) Darryl Williams: Again, jury is still out.  Looks to be a good depth player but hasn't proven to be starter worthy yet.

 

So, there you have it...  The bad, the ugly, and the incomplete.  This was completely cathartic writing this.  I no longer feel even an ounce of remorse about trading away a 4th Rounder for Andy Lee.  And neither should you...

Edit: Untouchable beat me to it. Leaving it though, if only to further highlight Seltzer's egregious, horrible, and generally unforgivable error. For shame.

It definitely would be the Huddle Way to pick out the smallest error and degrade the OP b/c of it... :)

Great post OP (although that list made me gag)

 

I still can't believe people were b*tching about the move. We get to VASLTY improve our special teams NOW, instead of hoping for depth at best from a prospect that won't even become relevant until year 2020. Once Lee is cotinually pinning teams into their own endzone and our defense feasting, people will stop their complaining

To try to give some further insight, here is a graph and visual representation of how long draft picks stay with their respective drafting team.  The data comes from a 15 year period.  Note this doesn't represent their entire career just their career with the team that drafted them.

Maybe @KB_fan (not sure how to tag on here) can dig into his magic bag of analytics for something more Panthers- specific.  All and all, goes to show the average 4th Rounder is not even playing out his first contract before he is released.
