I'm not punting expert but it seems that numbers tell a fairly accurate story.  Anything that happened with Nortman was a sunk cost; done; behind us. Everyone we worked out to replace Nortman blew. This guy is significantly better. Gettleman continues to ignore emotions, irrationality, and biases and do what he can to make this team sustainably better.

Having one of the best punters in history on this Panthers team doesn't sound too bad...

We've got him for 3 years/$10.4M total.

Colquitt was only one year at $4M.
Nortman got 4 years/$8.8M.

Big difference though is that Lee is really good while Nortman was (maybe) average.

OK, that's one, lol. Seriously though, it looks like we got a pretty darn good one, so I can live with it. I know for a fact that Gettleman loves his draft picks, so I have no doubt that he did his due diligence and knew exactly what he was getting with Andy Lee.

My Browns fan friends are telling me this dude is really good he was just in Jasckson's doghouse. 

4th feels like a lot but I'm never one to pretend to know all of GMan's moves because they are always more complex than just what's on the surface. I'll leave that to you guys. 

What I do know is a 4th is a small price to pay for good field position. You give our D good field position and no one's scoring. We weren't going to have that with any punter we tried out before this move...

Colquitt from Denver and  Quigley from Jacksonville were. Quigley averaged 45.1 yards per punt over 3 years.

The difference in guys who can't make a team and one of the best in the league seems like a lot IMO. Field position is too valuable to take a chance on.

I dont hate the trade but I think there were other positions in need of an upgrade we could have traded that 4th round pick could have helped the team more

We're all aware of the "a punt is not a bad play" philosophy in Carolina.

But in this case field position and our defense will pay dividends.

Betcha Gettleman watched Hue Jackson get in Lee's face the other night and knew coach was ready to make a trade based on his emotions.

A 4th seems a tad high but he's one of the best punters in NFL history so I'm not going to complain. Our STs just got a hell of a lot better.
