People making a big deal about giving up a 4th rounder but when you're a reallu good franchise 4th rounders aren't that important. In my opinion a pro bowl punter now is more important than a future back up that may or may not pan out

I bet every player on the Panther D is celebrating right now.  Come on....this is a freaking pro bowl punter who excels at:

1) sticking it inside the 20  & 

 2) awesome net yardage.

We gave up a very very late round 4th 2 years from now.  I think we will be ok....Gettleman will figure something out.  I have a hunch that he may be a bit smarter football guy than anyone here. He is not impulsive, always looks at value, and the man has a plan.  And...he is not emotional...unlike all you drama queens here!

Cam Newton was the number one pick in the draft. Luke Kuechly was number nine.

We were in the position to pick them at those spots because of how bad the teams that Hurney built the previous years sucked.

The highest that we've drafted since Gettleman took over was 25th because unfortunately we keep winning the division instead of sucking our way into a top ten draft spot.

And this is also a good place to point out that the number one pick that was used on Cam Newton was almost used to trade up for Jimmy Clausen. Throw in that the rest of that 2011 Draft was crap.

That's being realistic.

We were forced to spend the last few years removing Hurney's "stamp" from the salary cap.

Andy Lee has been consistently out kicking his coverage for a couple years now. His directional punting and control has diminished, but he can still boom it.

This is what you need to know. Following a punt Lee's defense averaged a starting position at the 21 in 2012 (Pro Bowl), at the 24 in 2013, at the 24 in 2014 (49ers chose not to keep Lee since he was showing decline), and at the 25 in 2015 (with the Browns).

Average field position following a punt for an average NFL punter like Nortman or Redfern is the 25/26 yard line. Lee was overpaid by the Browns when they signed him in hopes of him returning to his pro bowl form. That did not happen.

If the front office is not willing to pay Nortman $2m per season for average to slightly above average production with the potential for improvement (like 2013), then it makes no sense to trade a 4th round pick and pay a declining and aging punter more money with his average production.

I don't think most people on this forum actually recognize how great Cam Newton is, or it somehow doesn't factor into their minds when evaluating talent the way a Tom Brady does.  People realize that Tom Brady can make very mediocre weapons look excellent.  I mean you're bringing up guys like Mike Remmers as if he could survive on most rosters, without a qb like Cam, and still needing help from max protect.

Very few of the players you listed have really proved much of anything in the NFL.  Trai Turner and KK Short were excellent picks, especially in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.  We'll see how much camp hype translates into greatness with a lot of the others mentioned.

Our best players over the past few years were all Hurney, with the exception of KK Short's season last year.  Cam, Luke, Stew, Steve Smith, Thomas Davis, Greg Hardy (6th round pick), Josh Norman (5th round pick), Olsen (traded for a third), Kalil (2nd round pick), Charles Johnson (third round), Tolbert (overrated, but made the probowl) - all Hurney guys.  That's been the bedrock of our success.  Most of those pro bowlers I listed were not first rounders, contrary to the conventional wisdom Hurney just hit on obvious picks.

Gettleman has brought in a lot of quality complementary players, and drafted very well, but our impactful stars over the three year run as division winners have been almost all Hurney.  And I'm skeptical how we'd view these complementary patchwork pieces (especially on offense), if they weren't playing with Cam Newton.  Remember, we went 7-8-1 just the other year when Cam Newton was nursing injuries and not performing at an all world level.

Replace Cam with an average QB like Andy Dalton, and how good does he look passing to Ted Ginn and being blocked by Remmers and Oher?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yeah, you should have just kept lurking.

A GM is judged by the quality of the entire 53 man roster he builds, not just part of it. Heck, the worst teams in the league still have great players, but it's the overall results that count.

Even with Cam, Luke and all the others here, we were still losing before Gettleman took over. Now we're consistently winning the division and contending in the playoffs.

If you can't tell the difference between being a regular contender and being an occasional flash in the pan, you're probably not smart enough to watch football.
