When was the last time this place was so quiet about our 1st round pick?

First off--this is not a dig at Butler. I think he has the ceiling to be an absolute monster and today's NFL should center around the interior DL, OL, QB and front 7 in general. We are positioning ourselves very well.

My question though--what are we expecting from this kid? We have guys in Specific roles in Star, KK, Paulie S, etc but where does big Vern fit in? I see no talk about his performance, potential or anything and he was our top pick this draft. First time in forever that's been the dealio.

whatcha got peeps?

I've went back and watched most of his snaps over the last three games. He has been underwhelming, which is putting it mildly.

It doesn't look like he is playing with much leverage and is getting stood up at the line a good deal.  I'd also say he still has a lot to learn about the position at the pro level

Luckily for us, he doesn't have to step in and be a monster. He can get some great coaching from Washington and can watch star and KK do work on Sunday's.

Like Short, Butler is gonna need time too. Things in here are gonna be quiet on the Butler front for the next two seasons.

Short made an impression right away, at least once the season started, but the team also had way more need at the position and Short came from a bigger program. Agreed through that Butler is on a longer curve.

I think last year was pretty quiet too re: Shaq.  He was brought along quite slowly because of missing most of OTAs due to Washington being on the quarter system and his finishing school.  We didn't NEED Shaq to start at LB, so we had the luxury to give him time to grow over the season.

I assume we'll do exactly the same with Butler.

It's a very good place to be when you don't need to start your first round pick, but can give them maximum potential to grow and develop,  It's clear DG is looking a few years ahead now that he has breathing room of a solid roster and some Cap space.  Sure, we'll be starting at least 1 rook at CB this year, but in our scheme, we can probably get away with that.

Generally teams starting several rookies at key positions don't make the playoffs.  When you think to where this franchise was in 2012, it's amazing we have the luxury to develop guys for the long-term.

I was in Denver last year so my memory is a little iffy ( :) ) but Shaq generated a TON of discussion around and after the draft. Impact wise, yeah he wasn't felt immediately but there was still a good deal of talk about him up until September.
