Kaepernick makes statement during National Anthem

Think what you want of Colin Kaepernick, but I give the kid some major kudos for standing up---or not, as it were---for what he believes in.  Yeah, I am sure that some people will feel appalled amid their melodramatic moral outrage, but they are more interested in histrionics than empathy and fairness in our fair land.

His latest refusal to stand for the anthem -- he has done this in at least one other preseason game -- came before the 49ers preseason loss to Green Bay at Levi's Stadium.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game against Green Bay. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick said that he is aware of what he is doing and that he knows it will not sit well with a lot of people, including the 49ers. He said that he did not inform the club or anyone affiliated with the team of his intentions to protest the national anthem.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he said. "I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."

I applaud Kap for this, and, as man thinking outside of football, I can no longer in good conscience hold on to the relative pettiness of disliking Kap for his mockery of Cam Newton's Superman taunt.  And Speaking of Cam, whom I also admire, I can't but help think of his decidedly noncommittal stance on whether or not he as a black QB has been subjected to racism and the parallel to Kap's stance here.

Sure, everyone has an opinion, and both Cam and Kap have a right to feel how they like or express what they want, but it took a certain amount of courage for Colin to take a stand.  Yes, Cam is the bigger brand, and I suppose he has a lot more to lose, but he was already more financially secure than most, so at the end of the day he can basically say what he wants, just like Kap.  And Kap said a lot.

I think it's a hell of a stretch to say it's "courageous" in any way to refuse to take part in the national anthem.

If you want to talk courage, then recognize the individuals actually making an effort to bring about real change in our country, and the world itself.

Colin isn't changing poo, he's making it about himself.

I will never give anybody kudos for being an ungrateful jackass. If he don't like it here, he is free to leave anytime he wants.

And go back where? To Africa? I knew these comments and feelings would show up.

Its funny how most of the players endorse him and the gms/execs dont. So i guess the majority of the league that is on Kaeps side should leave to

The beauty of our country is that we are free to speak against it when it does not live up to its potential.

I do agree with the others that he isn't helping anything change

I admire him for all the trips he's made to Chicago, Baltimore and Detroit to help curb violence.

The only thing that will ever curb the violence is jobs. He can make a million visits and they will keep dealing drugs and shooting each other and nobody will ever pay for it  because snitches get stitches.

cant see how anyone should be celebrated for protesting our anthem

if Kap wants to make a statement on the issue, fine.  Protesting the anthem is a poor way to do it.  Flag/anthem represents too much to try to tie it into one current issue.
