Players who hurt/helped themselves (game 3)

Beau Sandland looks lost.

That toss sweep where Kuechly shot through like a missle was awesome.

Our run D was not good at all

Cam played like garbage. No free pass for him.

Cap ran well. Had a lot of YAC. He's poised for a breakout yr

Funchess was great. KB looks un interested. Dickson.. Lol

Ginn is explosive. Bersin.. You have one damn job, catch the ball!

Joe Webb for hall of fame. I like our 3rd string quick slots. They have no shot though

Beau Sandland has been disappointing. Doubt he makes the team.

I'm thinking he'll be a PS candidate.  Think he has some upside, but the demands we make on TEs are pretty major and it takes time to learn.

And move Coleman back to FS?

yup yup

Don't feel comfortable with Tre as FS because of his tendency to miss attempts at big hits rather than wrap up as mentioned earlier. Coleman did just fine at FS with Harper at SS. Would rather a SS that's able to tackle than a gambler.

Got to think Brian Blechen helped his chances to make the PS.  We're stacked at LB obviously, but this kind of versatility won't go unnoticed.

Here's some of Ron's comments about him, via BBR

  • LB Brian Blechen, who played S at Utah, found himself back in his former spot. Because the Panthers had just three healthy safeties, they put Blechen back there with Colin Jones when Coleman and Boston were done for the night.

“I was happy that I was able to just step in and not completely bust the coverage,” Blechen said, “or at least just get the job done late in the game.”

Blechen shared a tackle on his second play and finished with three stops.

“This was a big-time emergency, but who knows,” Rivera said when asked if Blechen could be moved back to safety. “Maybe he showed us something. Big, physical guy like that playing downhill — it was kind of impressive.”

That's interesting. Perhaps he gets some more time in that spot next week vs Pitt. Will have to look for that.

PFF's game grades write up is pretty interesting this week.  They have a nice breakdown of Cam's performance based on pressure / no pressure; blitz / no blitz:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-ne-car-grades-brady-garoppolo-struggle-in-patriots-win/

Cam Newton bounces back from early misfires, but gets little help from his WRs

This was a rough game for Newton, who was off-target early and ended with two interceptions, although neither throw was egregious. But across 46 snaps, there was more positive about his play than negative, which unfortunately isn’t reflected in box score due to the play of his receivers. Carolina’s pass-catchers dropped five of Newton’s passes (eight for the game), including multiple drops from Ted Ginn Jr. All five of those plays would have resulted in either a first down or touchdown. New England’s secondary also deserves credit, as Newton was frequently forced to check down or stay in the pocket well past four seconds. For the game he averaged 3.44 seconds in the pocket, substantially longer than any QB averaged in 2015 (Tyrod Taylor led the league at 3.23 seconds).

Also via PFF, here are top-graded players on O & D.

Quote

Top offensive grades:

G Trai Turner, 79.2

FB Mike Tolbert, 79.0

QB Joe Webb, 78.7

TE Marcus Lucas, 77.5

QB Cam Newton, 77.3

Devin Funchess stands out among a struggling receiving corps

While several Panthers receivers struggled, notably Ginn and TE Ed Dickson, second-year player Devin Funchess (76.7) was not one of them. He saw a team-high nine targets, hauling in five of them against four different defenders in primary coverage. On the ground, RB Cameron Artis-Payne made several impressive plays, creating yards in spite of poor blocking. He forced three missed tackles on 10 offensive touches, although three mishaps in pass protection substantially lowered his overall grade.

Top defensive grades

LB Shaq Thompson, 83.5

LB Luke Kuechly, 82.2

LB Thomas Davis, 80.2

DT Kawann Short, 79.0

DT Star Lotulelei, 78.1

Panthers’ starting linebacker trio grades very well

Predictably, Carolina’s top performers on defense came in the middle. The trio of linebackers – Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, and Shaq Thompson – combined for nine defensive stops, four of them coming from Kuechly, and in coverage allowed a lone seven-yard pass in four targets between them.

One thing no one has been commenting much on, but Star is definitely showing out much more at the moment.  Definitely more than just a space-eater.  Good to see him having a noticeable impact.

I focused on Lucas since I'm a homer. He was constantly open. He toasted his man on the Capers TD that got overturned too.

He isn't a good blocker, but give me the guy that's good at something instead of Simonson, Sandland and Dickson.

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
