"The problem is in the current NFL you can't keep everybody," Gettleman said. "So you have to step back and identify who you need to have. Not need, but who you most want to keep, and see if you can get deals done with those people."

Sounds promising for signing KK.

"The biggest responsibility I have is putting a value on a player. You value the player — this is what he's worth, and that's where it is," he said. "You can't shop like a drunken sailor, and we're not going to."

Sounds a little more iffy.

I guarantee you DGs priority in locking up KK changed a bit when Butler fell to us. DG is in a position of "wait and see how Butler looks" versus "we need to get this done ASAP."

Also Short might come back down to earth a bit and still be great. Or he plays lights out. Either way is not as bad as shopping like a drunken sailor now.

I'm not a salary cap expert so let me ask this: if Getts was able to come to terms with KK by offering him $15M a year with more money guaranteed is there an inherent difference in KK's cap hit than if we paid him the $17M per year with less guaranteed?

Especially when KK wants over 16 mil a year.   Let butler put together a season of film on top of possibly having short regress a little to be at a better value

I would think it would be in the best interest of Short to go ahead and sign a deal too.  The NFL stands for 'not for long' and these players are always one play away from being finished.  If I were Short, I would take the supposed $15M per year deal that was offered (if it really was).  Isn't $15M per year better than the $1M he plans to make this year.....when you make $15M per year does it really matter if you make a little bit more?

I remember when Kris Jenkins was in his prime....he was a difference maker and very talented.  But, he really only had a 2-3 solid years before injuries and etc started to take over his game, and eventually the Panthers traded him to the Jets where he had 1-pretty good year.  Short will be 28 in February.  Man, I would take the $15M per year now.

Since we did the 5th year option for $6M on Star for 2017, we have more flexibility on Star. Short we have to extend or tag and hope he signs the tag. Biggest issue with the tag is Short's age. He'd be 29 after the tag so maybe he'd not want to sign it. Honestly, I think that's the leverage we have. We can franchise him and force his hand a bit. How many teams want to sign a big long term deal with a guy who will be 30 in the second year.

While we love him, that might also be a big worry on DG's mind. Based on Cox's guarantee, you are basically paying Short 4 years (15 per) and that's when he's 29, 30, 31 and 32. If he has any decline when he hits 30, you are way overpaying him. If you extend without franchise, his last year is 31 before he could be released with no issue. That's far less risky. Personally, I think if he's truly a stud again, extend him for 4 guaranteed years and don't tag him. If not, who knows.

ETA: Sorry, kind of jumped to Short. If Star plays well the next two years, he'll be around 10 per year. I think that's around the top of the NT type market versus the pass rushing DT which is higher.

Good to know about Star.
