Quotes that stood out to me from John Fox's press conference today.

You are unbelievable....First round picks are in the top 32 college players selected every year...They should have some skills to be selected that high. We tried to fill at DT spot with a bunch of high picks and UDFA. It doesn't seem to be working out. If you don't think first round players should perform better than those drafted in latter rounds that you are stupid. I have read your other posts anyway - and you are stupid.

There's a difference between the most talented 32 players and the top 32 players selected.

Since 2001 (the year Smith was drafted) only 15/31 selections have since become pro-bowlers. Smith was a 3rd round draft choice, and is the most talented wide receiver to come out of that draft, but there were 10 selected in front of him. Do you see?

TJ Houshmanzadeh (a 7th rounder) is better than a Rod Gardner (a first rounder that year) and Antonio Pierce was undrafted. Do you see?

That's why people are up in arms about the money that rookies make, especially 1st round rookies, top-10 picks, because they have yet to prove anything, some of them will never pan out yet the market demands that a team pour millions into them.

Come on.

Even more, in 2002, the year Pep was selected, only 9 first-round draft choices have become pro-bowlers, and James Harrison, the NFL Defensive MVP last year, was undrafted!

In the 2003 NFL Draft, 2 3rd round selections have been voted to the probowl, but 4 undrafted guys have been.

See?

I agree that generally 1st round guys are more talented and deserve to be 1st rounders, but the notion that first round selection=talent is stupid.

Your last line "the notion that first round selection = talent is stupid" That tells me all I need to know about you. Let me build a defense with first round players and you build one with 4th round guys and we'll see if 1st round selections=talent. Yes there are some "busts" in the first round but generally first round guys are expected to play right away. Better yet, what's the percentage of 1st round guys that stay in the league more than 8 years compared to guys drafted in the later rounds? Look it up if you really want to find out.

Anyway, My original point was that I think the Panthers should produce better with the talent they have on the field. Apparently, you disagree.

Is there any truth to the belief that 1st rounders are given more of a chance to succeed, especially given the money teams invest in those guys? And that may contribute to the fact that more 1st rounders stay in the league longer? They can be quite the expensive mistake.

And make no mistake about it, I completely agree that we should be doing better with what we have, because I think we have a talented group of guys on our 53-man roster.

I for one actually find the Foxism's in his press conferences wildly entertaining. If ever there was a coach that you know wouldn't call you out, no matter how bad you screwed up, it's Foxy. I love how didn't answer the Baker punt question. Here's a typical comedic Fox PC session:

Reporter: "Coach Fox, if you have two defensive tackles on the roster, and you add two more, it would mean you would have four defensive tackles, correct?"

Fox: "It means I wouldn't have five."

Reporter: "I understand that. But more specifically, if you had two, and were to add another two, it would mean you'd have four, am I correct in saying that?"

Fox: "You would be correct in saying that at that point we'd have what we'd have."

What John Fox says in his PC is the last thing I'm worried about. If he gets fired, it will be because he can't win, not because he isn't entertaining enough or doesn't get mad enough and throw his players under the bus to the delight of the press and angry Panther fans.

This is exactly what I was thinking...

If you all expect him to explain why the flea flicker failed, then you're guaranteed to be disappointed... There was a play call, the defense won that battle on that play.. what kind of answer are you expecting? An entire thesis on why it failed? oooooookay then...

There is nothing to be gained by the questions and answers... nothing is going to make the loss go away. explaining these things to fans has nothing to do with behind the scenes where they go to fix these problems..

which is a whole other issue...
