So I'm officially directing and producing a feature-length Vietnam War film

Great stuff! @PhillyB

You've probably seen most of those 43 Vietnam movies I'm guessing... me too.

Whas your top 3?

ahh that's tough. i really like full metal jacket just because it's so iconic. it's so well done for its era even if it's very classically hollywood in terms of structure and sensation. i have to put tropic thunder in there even though it's not vietnam just because it brilliantly plays on vietnam war movie tropes and even does some stuff the average eye doesn't catch in terms of incorrect uniforms and loadouts. third... probably the walking dead. super obscure, but one of the best done films from a dramatic perspective (though it's been years since i've seen it.)

Hard to pick just three. Ha. I will have to revisit The Walking Dead now. One you might have seen but I would recommend is 84C Mopic. It was made on a real modest budget in the late 80's/early 90's filmed documentary style. It is full of cliches, wrong uniforms etc but was fairly creative for the time. Not a top 10 by any means but cool to see what can be done with limited resources.

  • 2 weeks later...

had a tech crisis about a week ago when my cinematographer bailed on point man to take a three-month gig on a vince vaughn production in nyc... hard to blame him. i was able to assemble a last-minute team including a kickass sound team that did absolutely brilliant work assembling microphones in a spread across the field to capture the sound of the approach in full stereo. it fuging rocked.

here they are running and gunning with a portable mic set to capture a secondary shot of guys jumping out of the chopper from the back

a few more fun shots: after shooting outdoors we moved into the studio, setting the helicopter up inside the hangar for a scene with some dialogue. lots of lighting and sound design to deal with. the blue screen fixed to the back of the bay door in a couple of the shots will let us take actual footage of southeast asian landscape flyovers and superimpose it into the background in postproduction to sell the location.

B-roll footage from the shoot:

We've come up wayyyy short on fundraising, so if this film is something you feel like you'd like to see made, or you'd watch when it's released, please consider helping support our efforts on the Indiegogo page so we can get the rest of it made. Lots of cool perks available in return (and of course my undying gratitude.)

check out the new trailer! it's the first look at production-quality cuts we've got so far. i cut it with imovie (lol) but if we reach budget we'll obviously hire out the entire postproduction job to get a hollywood-quality finish.

Will it have any gunshots or explosions?

yeah we'll be adding all that in post production, though if we get the budget i'll be able to fly a pyro guy out to cambodia to blow some poo up on set live, which will be fun, haha

so... only a couple days to go before the fundraiser campaign ends. i'm staggeringly short of the overall goal, but thanks to some back channel contributions i really only need another $3000 to green light the next step in the production, which is cambodia, easily the most important one.

if anyone believes in making this film, or otherwise feels generous enough to help it get made, i'd appreciate your support. three days to go, it's coming down to the wire.
