Cam Newton GQ Article "It's not racism we're beyond that." regarding extra scrutiny because he's black.

To say Cam is a sellout tells me  you know nothing about him. He didn't change his view under pressure, he is telling you his experience not speaking for all black people. He has had chances due to his athletic ability that the average person black or white haven't had. He has been given opportunities beyond what most any of us have and has worked hard for everything he has gotten.  Sure there are people who are racist and hate him because he is black but millions more love him and embrace him and they are largely white as well.  So for him he has transcended the whole black quarterback thing and likely feels others can do the same. Why can't he speak for himself without having to speak for a race.

Cam definitely put his foot in his mouth and said things that are just not reality. I'm not going to drop my fan card for him but I think I will go a little less hard on people who say racial poo about him. Because apparently they live in a different dimension.

I am so proud of his maturity. As one person said, some people do not like him based on his race. To acknowledge that would probably only breed more hate.

I am also really glad he didn't feed into someone like Micheal Bennett who insisted that Cam in particular speak out on race issue.

My main problem is that he said "We're beyond racism as a nation" when that is completely NOT true.

Definitely agree. But I would hate to flame him for this because I really think that discussions on race in sports and the QB position could fill an entire book rather than a couple of pages and quotes in GQ.

I think as a nation we may be beyond racism being the PRIMARY driver for criticisms of Cam and Black QBs.  But I think it still exists to some extent even within within that context.

Outside of that sports context there is no question that the nation has not overcome it

Confusing me there a bit Cam, to say people have different views is fine but when you have multiple people dropping the n word referring to you Cam i don't care how you paint it, it's racist. I guess it's Cam way of saying that bs doesn't bother him, which is a great outlook.

sorry to say but U.S. will never be beyond racism as long as social media is around

He said people have opinions. I took it to mean, Fyck them, you can't change some people, I'm going to be a part of helping kids of all colors at my own pace. You can't tell me how to feel and I won't be bullied into coming down to their level.

too much?

Im so glad I moved out of NC. The lack of logic in this thread is disgusting. I am not a Chinese woman. What arrogance would it take for me to speak as though I know their lives and what's best for them.

No more arrogance than being a Chinese woman and acting as if that qualifies me to speak for every other Chinese woman in the country. Just like I don't think being white qualifies me to speak for all white people and whats best for them. I can only speak to my experiences and that is exactly what Cam did. He said that he thinks the NFL has gone beyond the stereotype of the black quarterback and that part of racism is behind us. I never heard him say racism doesn't exist which is what people criticizing are saying that he said. He spoke for himself not a race.

Heres the thing though by not drawing any kind of line, to the people that look like him/people willing to speak on race in general (ands its already happened) he's committed to the "other side"  roughly speaking its the famous quote "indifference is taking the side of the oppressor" something figures like Michael Jordan got criticized his entire career for. it will to other black people feel like he's  a "sell out" by not using his platform to speak on issues we all know exist.

No one should be forced to speak, Not everyone has the ability to speak on race in a clear way but he did speak on it by saying its not a factor which plays right into that those super conservatives that think minorities like to the play the "race card" and we're living in a post racial society.   in trying to not take a side to many he essentially took a side and he's getting backlash for it

Micheal Jordan issues lie further then that, mainly due to his shoes and clothing line that play a part in increasing violence within the black communities, and the fact that it's been going on for years and he hasn't said anything or look to resolve the issue.........always been my biggest gripe with Jordan. That and the way celebs describe there run in with jordan. other then that you're spot on

people also need to quit looking for celebs to speak out on these issues, in a lot of cases YOU yourself might know more then they do, they just have a bigger influence. I'd rather him say little then say a lot of negative bs that not only causes a media frenzy but overall doesn't make the situation better.

THANK YOU.

It IS about racism. And it's a slap in the face for him to say this nation is beyond racism when this nation is VERY racist, and everyone and the police as well. I do not respect him for backtracking and saying what white people want to hear because he's afraid.

And I'm disgusted by the "fans" in this thread that say they like him more and more for this comment, or that he has come to his senses. You should have liked him when he spoke the truth last year. HQb. He's YOUR black qb, so you should respect his struggle as a black man in the country and respect his truth, even if YOU people in this thread aren't black and dont understand it. You people on this thread should've BEEN backed him. He's your goddamn quarterback.

He never said racism doesn't exist, he simply said that the racist views that a black player can't be a quarterback in the NFL are largely gone and that the majority of the criticism he receives is not racist in nature. It is his experience of his time as a quarterback in the NFL not a commentary of racism in the world. And frankly he hasnt struggled as a black man in this country. He has always been the best athlete and lived a middle class life with lots of opportunities
