I like it when these threads stay for awhile. This has been a good one too, without meanest, for a better word. I would bet that sports MBs and are some of the best places for real race talk. If this were random, yeah sure move it. But our QB is the focus, good or bad.

Until we see ourselves as one race, we will always run into this wall. We can climb, or fall into the mire. Personally speaking, the sunrise looks pretty good.

If it would have stayed kind of civil like the first couple of pages I wouldn't care much but then it got way too political to stay on the football forum. Once we started having multiple pages just as an argument then that was enough lol. I'm sure Jeremy agrees since he wanted to close it earlier. Oh and btw that video from Mad was pretty damn funny hahaha ^_^.

I personally believe that racism exists in all races. People always want to point at whites against everybody but other races are just as bad. I've seen many cases of Asians against black people, Black people against Spanish people, Spanish against white, and so on and so on. Racism is terrible no matter who commits it and the notion that one group can't be racist is atrocious.

Here is the thing.

White people in general (and white men in particular) control all facets of society.

Our political leaders are overwhelmingly white.  Our judges are overwhelmingly white.  Upper management in Fortune 500 companies are overwhelmingly white.  Business executives are overwhelmingly white.  Our resources and wealth are overwhelmingly owned and controlled by white people.

Point being, racism is a system, like capitalism, communism, liberalism, etc.  That is what the suffix -ism means.  In order for racism to exist, it has to be by the race that has economic, political, and cultural power.

So even if there are some people in minority races that are racists, that does not mean "racism exists against everyone"

And study after study suggests there is still issues of systemic racism in the US.  Especially anti-black racism.

I agree with every thing you said except the "sell out" part. I'm not going to call Cam that because I truly believe someone got in his ear and said "Shut up and play football!" He's afraid to talk now. Just last month in an interview with The Undefeated he had this to say:

https://theundefeated.com/features/cam-newtons-response-to-chris-paul-carmelo-anthony/

So, he went from that comment last month to the BS he said in the GQ interview this month. What changed for him to do that? It'll be interesting if we ever find out who got in his ear, but I highly doubt we will ever find out.

Also, Cam doesn't have to keep answering questions about race when he does interviews. We all know where he stands on that from his previous statements, but when he does interviews with a magazine, he should set guidelines on what topics are on and off limits. Especially since GQ came to him and not the other way around. Clearly he didn't want to touch on the race issue and tried to dodge the question, but ended up saying something totally ignorant that caused a firestorm.

I'm too lazy too look it up but I wonder WHEN that GQ article happened. I know it came out this month but the interview may have taken place before that. I don't know but something I thought about yesterday. It might make a difference. I don't know.

As for the whole race discussion, @PhillyB has described the whole narrative in a way I had never seen. It perfectly describes the root of the issue without assigning individual blame and getting people defensive. Having this discussion without deriding others (on either side) can actually lead to opening peoples minds to other points of view. But making it accusatory only closes peoples minds. BTW Cookie I'm not directing this paragraph at you. This paragraph is for the general audience.

Oh, side note totally unrelated, this short story is an awesome display of self referential material. http://consc.net/misc/moser.html

I'm not sure of the specific date that the interview took place, but it had to be recently.

Spend more time with people who don't look like you.

Spend more time with those who make more/less than you.

If you haven't had anyone different looking in your home in the last 6 months that's a good start.

Fire up the grill and clean off the deck and get some great drinks and music and kick back and enjoy a completely dif person(s) and enjoy and laugh and learn.

It's easy to do. Make the first step.

You have to go beyond a Webster's Dictionary to fully understand the difference between prejudice, discrimination, and actual racism

"Racism, however, is more than just prejudice and discrimination combined. Racism is a socially constructed reality at the heart of society¹s structures. Racism is the deliberate structuring of privilege by means of an objective, differential and unequal treatment of people, for the purpose of social advantage over scarce resources, resulting in an ideology of supremacy which justifies power of position by placing a negative meaning on perceived or actual biological/cultural differences. Racism and prejudice are not mental illnesses or psychological problems people have. Neither are they the product of "psychological abnormalities." Both are rational, cultural and structural phenomena to defend power. Racism goes beyond prejudice (an attitude) to structure this power advantage politically, economically, culturally and religiously within a social system, whether it be simple (as in personal bias) or complex (as in the role apartheid played in South Africa), which gives social advantage to some at the expense of others perceived to be inferior and undeserving."

Thread went well, imo. Some good discussion, and I'm of the belief you won't ever see the change you're looking for unless you talk about it. Threads like this, in the main forum, are needed from time to time.

Was a little disappointed in his comments, but today I'm ready to go back to defending dude whenever I feel like he's being unfairly attacked. Also, no, I don't think he's a sell out or coon. He could never be that with all the work and charity he's done for his communities.
