Ozzie Newsome and John Schneider

So... discussion question for everyone. It seems that all but the most ardent haters have come around for Dave Gettleman. But as I watched the Ravens the other night, and the Seahawks last night, I couldn't help but to wonder if maybe those teams should serve as a cautionary tale to our esteemed Gettlefather.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Seahawks don't have the talent to compete in the league this year. But no one can say the Ravens are as talented as they were a few years ago. And there is reason to believe that the same thing will happen to the Seahawks soon. What surprises me is that both of these teams have a top-tier GM according to public opinion.

My questions for the Huddle are 1) what mistakes did these teams make that set them up badly for their futures, and what can Dave Gettleman do to avoid letting the same thing happen to the Panthers?

Welp, probably a real concern in 2-3 seasons... Who leaves and who gets paid? KB or Funches. That's the next big question. So far nothing suggests Deeg (my new nickname) isn't always looking forward and knows how to deal for you. Unlike that Nixon guy..

I wouldn't overlook either one of those teams this year, and I sure as hell wouldn't trade Gettleman for anybody right now. There is nothing here to debate, IMO.

I wasn't talking about trading him. I just thought I had noticed a drop off in talent for both those teams and I was wondering how that happened with such knowledgeable general managers. And I'm definitely not overlooking Seattle. I could care less about Balty cus we aren't playing them this year

You brought a question of a cautionary tale but didn't give any examples...

the Seahawks operate nothing like Gettleman. Look at the trades they made. Lynch, Harvin, Graham. They've been shoppers in free agency too signing Avril and Flynn.

The most similar example to Gettleman is the Patriots way.

Yeah, I know you weren't suggesting that we trade Gettleman. It's just that I don't think any other GM could do it any better for the Panthers than he has. We will see how this year's draft picks play out and how the upcoming contracts get done, but he has been fantastic so far, IMO.

Unfortunately I don't see the seahawks going away,  yeah they might have trouble retaining Bennett but the majority of their key defensive pieces are locked up. Add in Wilson and their still top tier. As far as the Ravens go, they overpaid Flacco but honestly he has one of the craziest TD to INT in the playoffs ever so they HAD to pay him after the superbowl. Ozzie has dropped the ball having some poor drafts.  Their best receiver is an aging Steve Smith coming off season ending surgery, any team with that scenario is in TROUBLE.

Fair enough. Truthfully, I brought this up more as education for myself than anything. I had just heard rumors about Seattle, and even if they weren't legit, the question of how Gettleman avoids common GM pitfalls still applies. I know he drafts well and doesn't overpay players. But you'd think all GM's would know to do that... I suppose I was wondering more what sets him apart from even the Ozzie Newsomes, John Schneiders, and Bill Bellicheks of the league.
