Is it possible that the Panthers want Ginn to focus on being only a WR instead of splitting time as a WR & PR.....and maybe us Byrd as the special teams 'guy' that can be both a KR and PR.

Perhaps they see Ginn as more valuable as a WR, and don't want to risk injury to being a PR.  Ginn is now 31 years old so he starting to get some mileage on him.

No Star or KK. Seems like they both may be on the outs with management. Putting the 2014 and 2015 first round picks as the captains for the future. Byrd is not making it unless Ginn is done as the return man. If that is the case, we will see Joe Adams all over again with Byrd. No one trusts him to field a punt at the critical point of a game never mind the playoffs or SB.

One muffed punt does not equal a trend. If he had returned one for a td, would you expect home to return every punt for a td in the future?

it's a player cpantherking doesn't like so of course not

if it turns out that he's the next devin hester he might admit that he's sort of good but it will just be because of something hurney did in 2009 or something

Do you know what non-QB has the most fumbles in Panther history?  Our best punt returner...Steve Smith.

Fumbles are going to happen in the punt game.  Issue is the ones that consistently struggle.  You can't trust those guys.  Don't know what Byrd is yet

Oh look, another drive by snarking by our resident troll wannabe. I guess there are worse ways to seek attention.

I expect a punt returner to field every punt, average 9+ yards per return, make players miss tackles, and present a home run threat every time they touch the ball. A strong punt returner is a critical part of every SB team. The only time they earn a pass on a muff is when they have shown a history of game changing punt returns prior to that muff. I expect more TD returns than muffed punts for a punt returner. Byrd failed on all of them in the 1st preseason game.

Did you know Steve Smith has only muffed 2 punt returns as a Panther? He successfully fielded 178 punts as a Panther and had several big punt returns including a TD prior to his muffed punt. He had already demonstrated he could go an entire season in 2001 without muffing the punt.

This is not about fumbles. Fumbles are a whole different issue that involves protecting the ball. This is about muffs, which demonstrates a player is not capable of a specialty job.

This would be no different than a long snapper sailing the ball over the punter's/kicker's head, or a kickoff specialist shanking the kickoff out of bounds. They have one responsibility and very few critical opportunities to do this job in a season. A punt returner fields about 30 punts per season. One muff is too much. More than one muff in a season typically results in that return man losing his job.

Why do you think Ron Rivera was tearing up when the muff occurred? He loves the kid and wants him to do well, but he also knows what a single muff in a preseason game means when it is time to determine cuts. Byrd has to prove he is more reliable than Ted Ginn at fielding punts to justify a roster spot. Seems like the Panthers want Ginn to focus on receiver and not returner, but not at the expense of the team during the season.

So let me get this straight, if you muff a punt in your first game you are doomed forever? Never mind the fact that a player might return 1000 more punts without a muff???

I can't say how good Byrd will be but I darn sure know that one preseason game and a handful of punts aren't nearly enough to judge

Not doomed forever. Take the year to perfect it, and try again next preseason. No time to waste on players who are not prepared for specialty positions and making mental mistakes. He only gets 30 chances a season. Any of those 30 chances could cost the Panthers a game if he muffs it.
