Kurt Coleman: "You guys really threw a flag on him?"

Just so i'm understanding this completely, this is supposedly a new rule?  They're basically saying ANYONE who wasn't among the 22 players during the play cannot step on the field as the play is going on?

Otherwise, I felt like if it was an existing penalty, they just did it last night to fug with Cam.

Why exactly are we complaining about this?  I'd prefer it happen now than in the regular season.  The NFL has rules, and they're showing the coaches and players how they're going to be enforced.  Unfortunately things like the Steelers playoff game last year happen and ruin it for everyone.

From the NFL rulebook (2015 edition, but it's still valid)

"Penalty: For more than 11 players on the field of play or the end zone while the ball is in play: Loss of five yards from the previous spot."

http://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2015-nfl-rulebook/#rule-5.-players,-substitutes,-equipment,-general-rules

The rule has been on the books forever, but it has been getting out of hand in recent years. Really, just stay behind the lines guys.

And here's an example why the rule exists:

The great Tommy Lewis tackle from the bench, ftw!

When I saw the thread title I thought this was going to be about the ref literally hitting a Panther player in the back of the head with a flag while he was on the ground. I'm pretty sure it was Philly that it happened to on the Funchess block in the back play. I've never understood why refs feel the need to throw flags at players, just drop it on the ground.

i thought it was a reaction to dez bryant running on the field and arguing with a ref in the playoff game against i think the lions in 2014.  the one where he should have drawn a 15 yard unsportsmanlike but nothing happened.

It's been around forever, but they decided to enforce it more this season, and I agree with them, it was getting out of hand.

I would have preferred a warning, but I bet every team/HC in the NFL will take notice after last night, and how "big" the play was.

Glad Cam learned a lesson, and it doesn't cost us a game in the regular or post season.

No that's not it. The reason is stated in the article...

Quote

After Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter came on the field during the personal foul-marred playoff game against Cincinnati in January, the NFL has made keeping players and coaches on the sideline an officiating point of emphasis

Apparently, keeping players and coaches off the field is a point of emphasis this year, mostly due to the incident with the Steeler coach last year.

I am kind of glad they threw it.  It was preseason, and now each and every player and coach on the team understands to stay off the field.

Cookie, if you want to paste text without the formatting error, select "Paste plain text" instead of just normal "Paste" in your right click options menu.

Actually, if @Cookie Lyon is on her phone, when she pastes a quote with formatting, like the Observer's, she just needs to hit the black "remove formatting" block that pops up, then it will paste correctly.

Does anyone have a list of the penalties they are emphasizing this year? the link on NFL.com is not in operation.

EDIT: http://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2016-rules-changes-and-points-of-emphasis/

Apparently google had a bad link-out.

Same, do it on a huge play, with the defending NFC championship team, against one of the leagues most popular players, and coaches and players will react.
