A guy had his hand cut off and to try to salvage it, they attached the vessels and skin to his leg to try to save his hand. 

Most parts of the body can "come back alive" by hooking it back up to blood flow given the right circumstances

From the calf though?  Damn, that's going to be a long healing process.  Hopefully, they save the hand, but I can't imagine having my calf cut like that.

Edit for question: Why can't they hook it back up to the normal spot?  Has the body already decided that it doesn't need to send blood there or something?
