Why do opposing fan bases and fans think the Panthers don't pay their players?

You are such a blowhard.

RR and DG talked about it all the time, this team needs to be relevant....once you are, and are in the playoffs year in and year out, you will win one.

We are now relevant, we are a contender, something we could never say in the past.

The main thing that changed when Gettleman replaced Hurney is the bottom of the roster. The top of the roster is still pretty much the same as it was when Hurney left. Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Ryan Kalil, Greg Olsen, Charles Johnson, Jonathan Stewart, etc. But what changed were the guys at the bottom, the guys that develop into contributors that help the star players. Hurney wasn't so good at that last part.

The majority of NFL players, not even counting the ones that don't make rosters, only last 2-3 years in the NFL. Players are at their physical peaks around 23-25. Gettleman has squeezed out decent starting years from undrafted free agents. Robert Lester, Melvin White in 2013, Philly Brown and Andrew Norwell in 2014. In 2015, the team was good enough the Panthers didn't have to start undrafted rookies, and look how that went.

But getting back to the point, it doesn't make sense to pay guys you can replace, and Gettleman gets that. You can't keep everybody. But if you're constantly turning over the bottom of your roster, you can find guys that can jump in and replace the guys you lost. Pay the irreplaceable guys. Gettleman said "I'd have to be brain damaged" not to give Luke Kuechly a contract extension. Josh Norman? Not so much.

Tell that to the Bills, Vikings, Titans, Eagles, Bengals, Chargers, Falcons, and Browns. They have more playoff games than the Panthers.

There are only 19 teams that have won a SB. Nine of those teams have 40+ playoff games. The Vikings have been to the playoffs 47 times. Where is their SB?

The Panthers have 16 playoff games over 22 seasons. The Panthers are averaging 2 playoff games per season under Gettleman. So, if the Panthers are able to keep up that pace, maybe they can break into that 40+ playoff game club in 7 years. Then we only hope the Panthers are not like the Vikings.

Since free agency began in the NFL, all of the 13 SB winning teams have all signed multiple big money free agents and traded for top players at their position to secure the SB championship. Without paying the money to those key players they would have just been another playoff team.

You are clearly satisfied with waiting a long time for a SB championship while enjoying the playoff games by supporting the Panthers current personnel plan.

Again, blowhard.  And yes, I'm pretty damn satisfied with the direction the arrow is pointing in regards to the Panthers.

Why don't you go ahead and tell me the myriad of teams that signed "big money free agents" that didn't work out, I'll wait.....

Again, why not support a team that plays football the way you want it?  Maybe someone like the Dolphins, Saints, or Jets?  Why support draft first teams like the Steelers, Panthers, and Packers?

The "multiple big name free agents" thing is bulls--t, and obvious bulls--t given that teams like the Packers and Steelers pretty much never do this practice. We know good and well you haven't researched this point and you're just pulling it out of your ass.

But as to the playoffs, we've been in the playoffs every year since our new GM took over.  I mean heck, that guy only got us to the playoffs three times in eleven years.  Under the new guy, we've already equalled that and are set to go for more.

If we'd have stuck with him, I guess we'd have been saying we were satisfied to only go to the playoffs every few years instead of being a perennial contender.

Good thing we hired the new one instead of sticking with that last guy, right?

what the hell is the point of even watching the games in the first place if their worth and enjoyability can only be justified in retrospect after winning a super bowl.  just skip the season and get gamepass and re-watch all the games in the proper context if we win a title.

this would be much less of a mindfug if cpantherking wasn't as open a hurney apologist as he is considering the panthers having a winning record was a tall order for much of 2006-2012.  this is obviously personal on some level.

Packers have won 2 SB since free agency began. The 1996 team was loaded with free agent signings (Reggie White, Santana Dotson, Sean Jones, Gilbert Brown, Frank Winters, Keith Jackson, and more). The 2010 team anchored their defense with free agent signings (Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett and Charlie Peprah).

The Steelers have also won 2 SB since free agency begun. They also made some major signings to cement their already playoff caliber team. They landed James Farrior, Kimo Von Oelhoffen, Jeff Hartings, Justin Hartwig, and Ryan Clark.

On top of that, they held on to their top tier key players in the secondary and at WR by signing them like Leroy Butler, Nick Collins, Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, Deshea Townsend, Ike Taylor, Troy Polamalu, and Hines Ward.

They paid for their championships. Every SB champion has paid for their championship since free agency started. Show me one team to win the SB since free agency began that did not pay big money to their home grown DBs/WRs and also pay out big contracts in free agency for key players. You need to do your research before making unsubstantiated false claims.

Your use of "pretty much never do this practice" sums it up. You know they do it, and you know they need to do it to get that Lombardi. Otherwise, they are just another playoff team.

The Panthers are not a draft first team since Gettleman has taken over. Five picks in the draft per season while trading away most of the draft for a player who will never be a #1 WR is not a draft first team. The Panthers rely on sub par free agents and udfas to fill a majority of the roster over the past few seasons. Stop putting them in with the Steelers, Packers, and Patriots who stock pile their draft picks for 9 to 10 per season. Also, none of those teams sign a ton of udfas and sub par free agents to secure their depth or starting roles.

The Panthers are a crutch team. They lean on players that have been around for a while, get rid of their key young players, and load up on cheap players to fill out the team. They are riding the talent that was here back in 2011 and 2012 while thinning it out. There is nothing substantial beyond them that would keep this team in the playoffs, and they continue to be surrounded by lesser talent every season.

by the way, there is no magic formula for winning the super bowl.  if anything having a quarterback and a stable front office/coaching staff in conjunction with consistently making the playoffs tends to be a common denominator but even that's not always necessarily true.  there isn't some one single thing all the "smart" teams do that the panthers are too stupid or cheap or whatever to.

there are teams that are loaded up with free agents that win and there are teams that are primarily composed of stars they drafted themselves that win.  and teams that straddle those concepts.

Opposing fan bases know next to nothing about the Panthers. Here is what opposing fans know:

Cam Newton is our QB.

We lost the SB to Denver.

We didn't pay Josh Norman.

Blue is one of our team's colors.

The end. So yes they're going to think we don't pay our players.
