Strickland's day four observations. One interesting tidbit.

I wouldn't actually say there is anything groundbreaking or new from Bryan Strickland's observations as to what has already been reported except for one thing. Strickland is intimating that Paul Soliai may get a visit from the Turk.

"It's a great battle," Rivera said when asked about the depth of the Panthers' defensive line. "As a coach, you're always concerned that you may have to release a really good football player."

It's a good problem have but a potential problem nonetheless. Rivera praised the work of defensive tackle Paul Solial, a former Pro Bowler who could find himself in a real battle for a roster spot."

 

I mean, how can the coach praise Soliai on one hand, while Strickland suggests that he could be a goner on the other? Well, if the talent of the younger, cheaper guys becomes "painfully" obvious, then I suppose in theory that Soliai could be axed. 

Other than that little suggestion---which is very interesting---Shaq's rising prominence, Teddy Williams' over aggressiveness to the consternation of Rivera, and the HC cautioning people to keep what you see in perspective in regards to how the offensive vs. defensive battle is going, it's pretty much another day at the office.

I think the battle would be between Soliai and Love. 

The team media guys just sort of fill space with words.

Think we keep Love and Soliai.

Soliai is our best option at backing up Star at NT.  That big body clog that eats double teams.  Edwards was a solid backup and Soliai fill fill that spot even better

Sloiai is staying.  Strickland is creating fodder.  Getts brought him in, so he stays.  It's a GM's league, the coach's feelings inform the decision, not the other way around.

Not saying Soliai is leaving, Jeremy's pix of Soliai taking out both Norwell & Stew simultaneously today have got to have Gettleman & Ron pinching themselves....

But you can't just say "Getts brought him in, so he stays"

There are plenty of vet FAs whom Getts has brought in whom we've let walk.  Jason Trusnik and Jordan Todman from last season come to mind, and I think there were some OL guys too...

The Dline competition and choices as to who we keep and the split between numbers at DT and DE on the roster is going to be very very interesting.

I hope we keep 5 DTs.  There is some injury history in the group of course and I think Love is worth keeping at the expense of another position.

I certainly agree with this.  In re: Soliai, though, he's on a little bit different level than most FA signings given his playing position and the emphasis placed on that position by the organization.  For two years, seven million, and many other reasons I don't want to take the time to list out [you got me there ;)], I'm firmly in the camp of "he stays."

I think he's our no. 3 DT.  He will most likely be the first DT off the bench to give Star a breather and keep him fresh for the 4th.

They're gonna have to cut some legit players this year, but Soliai is highly unlikely to be on the list.
