Not a great day for the Panthers offense.

Gonna be real with you guys the D really wasn't as good as we say it was last year. First couple of games were hell they couldn't stop anybody

The defense had some ups and downs during the early season, and for that matter so did the offense.  But of the first four, they only really struggled in one (against the Saints).  Panthers offense didn't do much against Jacksonville, but the defense allowed the Jags 0 points in the second half.  The D did enough to win against the Texans.  Against Tampa, the defense made life for Jameis Winston miserable, picking him off four times.

I think it's just that our offense was incredibly (and quite surprisingly!) exciting last season.  For several seasons it seemed that Cam wasn't able to play up to his rookie potential, then BANG somehow our offense was unleashed... suddenly things clicked, so that has made people want to talk about it!

And the Huddle is hardly alone in this.  The well-known adage "offense sells tickets..."

Offense is a lot easier for the average NFL fan to grasp.  The stats are quite evident in catches, rushing yards, and the score...   Defense is sometimes less transparent.

Well I think people are forgetting the superbowl lose was more because of the offense.

But it gives off a very wrong impression that this team is far more dependant on offense than we are defense. We cannot afford to dump a disproportionate amount of resources into that unit at the expense of our offense and then expect our offense to lead the way.

What is going to happen is that by October, when our offense is not out there scoring at will, the Huddle will then get upset because we couldn't hang 50 on the Seahawks and then start to blame the OC or the QB. We should be able to comprehend how the Panthers built our team and focus on those units as strengths. That way if/when the sh*t hits the fan we are not out here calling for the heads of people that were given everything needed to succeed...not the unit that had to work with whatever resources that were leftover.

I'm not following you. The defense is stacked at DT and LB and that's basically it.  All the resources on D you spesk of arent going to be in their prime in October. The offense has experience and is proven almost across the board.

It was the DEFENSE that had more ups and downs than the offense last year.

The offense was pretty darned consistent (except for one game at Atlanta) all year long.

The defense almost lost us a couple of games (Green Bay, Indianapolis) that the offense pulled their fat out of the fire on.

The offense wasn't that good in the first quarter or so of the season.  They were nearly nonexistent against a bad Jacksonville defense, putting 13 points on the board added to a pick 6 by our defense.  They were barely adequate against Texas, and so so against an another bad defense in the Saints.  They started to click a little against Tampa, although they benefited greatly from four defensive interceptions, including one pick 6 and an incredibly lucky, right place right time play by Ed Dickson.  It wasn't until the second half of the Seattle game that they really began to show what they could do.

And since you mentioned the Green Bay game, I will say that while the offense was mostly great against Green Bay and our defense had a very bad second half, a terrible late game interception played a huge role in Green Bay's almost comeback.  The reality of that game is that for the first 2/3rds or so of that game, the offense and defense played great, and for the last 1/3 or so, both played terrible.

Remember how bad Philly was last year in preseason? Drops everywhere. But in the regular season he was usually money when called upon. It's camp... Mistakes happen, even with pros. If anything... Be excited about the fact that our defense is looking even better than last year. That's what the media and outsiders don't realize. They see us losing Norman and think we have a hole now. But they don't spend a second talking about how good Thompson is or our dline and young secondary. Seriously. We might have one of the best line backing corps in NFL history next season. All 3 guys are gonna be playing at an all pro level.

What does that have to do with what I stated about this forum's obsession with our offense to the point that we talk/care little about our defense? I wasn't criticizing our offense. In fact, given what they had to work with our offense is amazing. I am criticizing the Huddle's hyper-concentration to a unit that comes secondary to our defense.

It would be one thing if talked about of offense constantly because our front office spent a lot of time/resources on that unit...but for 1/2 a decade the Panthers have taken the approach of dumping almost everything into our defense. Yet we spend 80% of our time talking about what our expectations of our offense are or what our offense can/can not do. Our focus should be on our defense...they are the ones with all the amazing toys.

Check the salary cap distribution, it's 2-1 in favor of the offense (82 million to 39 million). Compare that to other "defensive" teams and the panthers defense is half the cap of Denver and the Jets, over 30 million behind Seattle and Houston. We rank 11th is spending on offense in the league and dead last on defense. So much for dumping everything in defense.

This season it's 57/43 offense.
