The Panthers are the best team in football...with a chink in the armor at DE on paper.

At DE? um no. Maybe at CB but not DE. Ealy and CJ will be fine and there are a lot of very solid young guys behind them. Not to mention have KK and Butler and other Dlinemen that can rush the QB. On paper our DEs and line as a whole are better than last season

people do realize that CJ struggled before he got hurt....not just after.

I think if we have the opportunity, we should be looking to beef up our DE, DB, and OT spots.  I still support the addition of legit speed at WR that can catch too.   I love what Ginn has done for  us...but he leaves a lot on the field and our current O is built for that position to thrive.

He was great in the playoffs after getting the bye and some rest to heal up.

He was hurt all season.  He dealt with a hamstring most of the year, starting in week 2 against the Texans, and had a calf strain/trap injury during training camp/pre-season.  He looked really good near the end of the season.

Though I do agree we should always look for opportunity to get better at the position.

Don't take my word for it.  Look at our pre-draft prospect visit list.

Hoping for the best w/no injuries is one option.  Unleashing the Kraken another.

OK, I won't take your word for it. Below's the pre-draft visit list. I see 6 DEs. 4 DEs that were likely potential guys in the 1st round and 2 UDFAs. That sure doesn't scream chink in our armor to me. Dodd and Lawson, along with Alexander were Clemson guys, which means that they were freebies, local college guys who you could visit with that didn't count for your limit.

IMHO, the draft visits appear to say that we did our homework on several positions and lots of players for the 1st/2nd round (in case we move up, trade down, etc.) and DEs were part of that, but the fact that we looked at 4 DEs that all went in the first 37 picks, passed over 3 of those 4 for our pick at 30 and then had 0 more visits with any draftable DEs speaks volumes to the opposite of what you are saying.

If you look deeper, we had Alexander, Dodd, Lawson, Ogbah, Spence, Butler, Corey Coleman, Derrick Henry, Laquon Treadwell, Tyler Boyd, Vonn Bell, Su'a Cravens, Jarran Reed, A'Shawn Robinson, Sterling Shepard, Cyrus Jones and Germain Ifedi who were all players taken in the 1st/2nd rounds before we took Bradberry. That is 4 DEs, 3 DTs, 1 OT, 1RB, 4 WRs, 2 CBs and 2 Ss. IMHO, that is covering your bases and taking advantage of 3 of them being free visits from Clemson. Spence, Dodd and Ogbah were all there when we took Butler, so DG didn't agree with you that we had a chink in the armor.

OMG How dare you bring logic and statistics into this clearly emotion driven discussion? You know every pre-draft visit that was not a DE was only brought in to discuss which DE we should draft. Got to cover every angle.

IMHO, we appeared to do due diligence on the guys in that late 1st/2nd round. Lawson didn't count because it was a free visit, but you don't see any names of the guys almost guaranteed to go top 15. The DEs could have also been a bit of a smokescreen since we literally had no other draftable DEs visiting outside of guys picked in the first 39 picks and everyone assumed we would take DE.

If you really look, the meat and potatoes (after the glut of potential picks for 30) it was all around the DBs, including a lot of safeties as well. Maybe a few OTs in there as well after Ifedi, but really it was all about DBs after the guys we could literally pick only 1 of without giving up a lot to trade up in the 2nd.

I said chink, and it's the reason "everyone assumed we would take a DE".  Same chink that became an avalanche in the 2nd half of multiple games last year.  You seem smart enough to know that without reliable depth and/or even one injury then it's "Houston, we have a problem".  And even if GMan is forward thinking, he still traded a 6th for a has been on his last leg, a one year rental and a measly two sacks-a DE, who, by the way, had less sacks in 18 games with the Bears as a 33 year old than Hardy Jr did in 12 games with the Cowboys as a 27 year old.

If we had signed Pep last offseason he would be the best DE on the roster. That's where we're at, and that ain't good.

CJs string of injuries looks a lot like a body that is starting to give up and that's natural, something that can't be stopped or improved upon.

Ealy is a bright spot but now everyone will be game planning for him so it could get difficult without somebody on the other side forcing the issue.

Acting like we're all good at DE is just that, acting.

Stewart is a game changer in our offense right now,and on the surface that can deceptively elude the wandering eye. however,I do think you pretty much hit the nail on the head, outside finding an upgrade for CAP or Wegher.
