The Panthers #1 problem is...

I hate to say it but right now its coaching. In the Philly game they weren't ready to play at all and got embarrassed. Today, there were dumb calls made throughout the game. The flea flicker was idiotic. I was sitting there in disbelief that we were actually in field goal range with 1st and 10 and we tried that crap. We were moving the ball with ease against the Falcons, there was no need for it. The clock management at the end of the first was ridiculous to say the least. If they could have been smarter about it then we could of tried a long field goal. The blocked punt and the poor kickoff coverage were further reason as to why I'm shocked that Crossman is still the special teams coach. And why on Earth Fox decided to go for it on 4th and 10 I'll never know. We could have easily got the ball back and even if we were in the same situation that hail mary could have been for the win and not a possible tie.

The defensive coaching is what really grinds my gears. It is only week 2 and Matt Ryan and the rest of the NFL have figured out our defense. That's flat out embarrassing. Everyone is screaming that its Fox and not Meeks but thats not true. This is exactly what Meeks did in Indy, the players, fans, and media have said that he was incredilbly vanilla. They relied on the front four to make plays and hoped that Manning would outscore the opponents. This scheme is NOT working. We pretty much conceded about 7-8 yards on every play by dropping the LB's that deep on passing plays. Ryan hit the underneath routes and the deep middle which is legendary as the open space in the Cover 2. And when those weren't open Ryan had ALL FREAKIN day to find someone who was open. Its tough to watch our defense and then watch the Jets and how they blitz like crazy and even rattled Brady. We couldn't scare David Carr right now.

I think the Panthers are very talented and I feel that we can still finish the season 10-6 and make the Playoffs. But the only way we have a chance is for these coaches to recognize what isn't working and fix it soon because as of right now Fox and company have been outcoached two weeks in a row.

We have many glaring problems right now, ST being chief among them. We gave up too many long returns that put lots of pressure on our "D", you just can't do that when the other team has a Ryan and the other weapons they possess! I was glad to see that the 'Wildcat' wasn't used on long yardage situations like it was last week, I don't think lining Jake up at WR fooled anyone. I DO want to see more razzle-dazzle on offense, and more screens as well to our RBs (although I was glad to see that more passes were thrown to the RBs in the flats today). Some wrinkles on STs would help too, why not a reverse at some time on a kickoff return? We're still too predictable on offense, and our defense had trouble applying pressure on Ryan. They have to continue to get the TEs more involved, as they did today, and developing Jarret is a MUST, Smitty is getting too beat up with each game, because we're relying on him too much.

    • Team is dangerous right now, all four lines are contributing and the speed at which the guys play at is tremendous.
    • And every nfl player wannabe tries to up their draft position through things like the combine and theyre all basically lying though those drills theyve practiced hundreds of times that have little bearing on if theyre a good football player. The pro days are even worse. All you have to do is dupe 1 team. Is it right? No. But until teams put more emphasis on college tape vs. What they did in shorts with no defense it'll happen every year. I doubt there is a single player that wouldn't try anything to up their draft prospects.  Young had years of tape and that shouldve been what the decision was based on. Not a scale and throwing in shorts.  ( btw I think the combine and pro days are 90% a waste of time) Young has it financially made already. It's up to him if he wants to be a good football player too. I think the benching was the best thing that could've happened to him. It remains to be seen if it was enough
    • This.  Honest introspection on his behalf would have seen that size and strength were his biggest weaknesses. He looks no different. With the programs in the NFL, he could have come back to camp 10 lbs of muscle heavier. Easily. If had done so, it would have been reported on. It would have been the hottest story…. But we never saw anything of the sort, so it probably never happened.  He showed improvement this last game, likely from Andy’s tutelage. He has to show something VERY special to close the season out to change my thinking on him… like 4 game winning streak with a clutch 4th quarter comeback. Then maybe.
