It's become painfully obvious that Steve Smith...

Doesn't explain his effort last week and late last season.

This thread is all about a trend, not an individual occurrence.

If you want to read into trends then our focus has been off Smith since 05. We dont draw plays up anymore that focus on Smith. Our main focus is Running the Ball and using Play action. I still dont like that we let go of Henning cause he may not use TEs much but he used his best players to his advantage. 03 we pounded the ball with Davis cause he was our start in 05 we didnt have a run game so we focused on Smith because he was our star. Davidson Dose exactly what Fox wants him to do and thats to run the ball and control the clock. Henning did it his way and thats why he was fired.

Now if your just talking about him out jumping and out muscling Defenders he was doing it all game and yea he got beat once..... Its gonna happen when your QB puts you in that situation numerous times.

Curl routes only work if you keep between the defender and the ball. Its all about positioning, regardless of the late throw.

And Smitty didn't have position.

Dominant receivers will work to get open when all other routes are covered.

smith was trying to make sure he was pass the first down maker,if he had come back for the ball the atl spot refs would have probably spot it wrong again.plus it was late, bad timing,he just got a BS PI call just before that so that could explain why he didn't go ham on houston for the ball. that has nothing to do with his abilities and such

Take a look at the game tapes I've seen at least 3 plays where Jake either over or under threw smith on flat out go routes. All 3 of these routes steve flat out beat the CB. One was against Asante Samuels when he picked off the under throw and 2 against ATL. He hasn't lost a step at all the ball just isn't where it needs to be.

In regards to your argument ab the Int against ATL. The ball was thrown soft and behind steve which makes it pretty easy for the CB to make the adjustment faster then the WR and step in front. I do think he could of made a better attempt at keeping the ball from being picked off. But whats the point it was 4th down anyways and he had no shot at coming away with the catch.

bump

So what's the total count on the turnovers that smith is directly responsible for now? 4?

This man has lost his focus.

Not making the hard catches anymore either.

I don't blame him for losing focus, this team is in a downward spiral. He isn't who he used to be though, but still should be great.

Smith's lost a step, but he can still dominate in the NFL.

I do believe he screwed up on that last play. When you watch the replay, it was clearly on him. I also give Moose blame for his interception, where he made absolutely no effort.

BUT the offense comes down to one thing and one thing only! It isn't Moose. It isn't Smith. It's the run game. We have to run the ball to win... and we didn't. I don't understand why we go back from being so dominating last year with Double Trouble, to this. It's frustrating.

No team is perfect. We have our weaknesses which show when you stop our run game and force us to air it out deep. BUT for a team that hasn't run well for weeks after dominating the NFL... it's just very very frustrating.

    • If there's another QB that came to the combine after packing on 15 lbs of water weight to hide his playing weight, I don't remember it.  I understand it's all part of the pre-draft game, and he participated. The FO was stupid and ignored huge red flags.  On a side note though, I was at the airport a few weeks ago and saw a basketball team going through and decided to try and look through them. I'm 6'2 and these guys were 6'6 and up. I was amazed by how much I couldn't see around them. And these guys weren't 300 plus in pads. I still think he's having a hell of a time seeing the field at the NFL speed.
    • There is merit to the points you're making here. On the flip side one could argue it took us investing 150 million in the oline for him to have a breakout season. And he has still yet to hit 1k rushing yards in a season. As far as Brooks goes the position does not require that significant of a draft investment for many other teams. That's not being negative it's just a matter of fact. The 49ers did quite well with a UDFA running back while McCaffrey was out. It is understandable that some people have concerns. That being said it boils down to whether or not you believe in the player. We just have to see what happens with him and Brooks.
    • Okay, that day in Vegas had to embarrass him completely. Andy showed him how to do the job.  What I think when I go there, why did it take Andy? He has had game after game of watching actual NFL QBs work and that didn't do it?  Anyhow Andy did not mess around, he stood in there and did his job and got rid of the ball ahead of the pressure. Down the field. With the same players Bryce had. Night and day.  If that didn't wake him up nothing ever would. But I don't think he has any sort of top NFL QB in him, he just lacks the full tool kit.
