Are the Panthers receivers just average?

Look, guys n gals, KB is coming back. Funchess has added experience, motivation, and apparently muscle. Byrd, maybe the smallest, but likely the fastest man on the team has added noticeable muscle. Hill, the conglomeration of size and speed, has had a fortuitous improvent in circumstance and coaching that has brought about a positive evolution in his attitude and hopefully his game. Our rookie UDFA put up more yards than any receiver in college last year, and already brings a certain amount of motivation from being overlooked, and a positive attitude from having to overcome a profound injury while in school. His circumstances already made him mentally tougher, and perhaps injuries to KB and Hill have made them more tough as well.

These are all unknowns that could possibly make our corps above average. You'd think that the only way we could go from last season's performance is up. That should at least garner a little bit of excitement, and perhaps a modest rise in these imaginary "rankings," as well as the real thing once the season begins to unfold.

We'll just have to wait and see.

As for actual production this a very generous ranking.  The upside is there and the best in the league is under center.  They should exceed expectations.

One thing to note, is that the ranking is for the ENTIRE receiving corps - i.e. WRs AND Tight Ends.  So Olsen's production is counted too.

Ginn was by every definition above average last year. Does the average NFL receiver have more yards or tds than him? I'm using the literal definition of average because it's the only definition. Does the average receiver cause more match up issues than Ginn or make more big plays? That would make for a fantastic league if the average guy produced like that. Yes, he dropped a lot but he still broke open games for us despite that.

Look at his skill set. Look at what he's done as a WR without Cam as his QB. He's a below average NFL WR. Cam makes him.

Yes & no.  Ginn and Cam obviously have special chemistry.  But Cam doesn't give Ginn his speed.  Ginn is a dangerous weapon the Panthers seem to have found a better way to exploit than other teams.  The fit is good.  But Ginn is half of the duo.  We missed Ginn's speed a lot in 2014.

Ginn isn't our #2 though..... And not many 4th string receivers get 10td seasons....

Whose our number 2? Funchess couldn't beat out Cotchery last season , all of a sudden he's gonna leap frog over Ginn.

And yes Ginn is a 4th string receiver on most other teams, he was a 4th string in both SF and Arizona.

Exactly. He's a fast guy with a limited skill set and poor hands who fits a specific role in our system and benefits from a QB with the arm to take advantage of his one true asset - pure speed.

In other words, the whole package = below average NFL WR. That's why he's failed as a WR elsewhere in the NFL.

It really really ticked you off how Cam made our WRs look so good last year, didn't it?

Not really, I'm stating the obvious. We were top 3 in drops, first in yards lost to drops, first in TD drops, bottom 3 in YAC last season. Being ranked 14 is generous.

Ginn whose our number 2 is a 4th string receiver on every other team, so yes we are average.

Not sure Ginn should be a 4th receiver on other teams. He had a career year playing against other defenses top or second cornerback. At least he is a real force in our scheme with Cam tossing him the ball.

Id argue that even with Olsens numbers you're still looking at one of the least productive groups in the league statistically.  You would know better than i, but Cam makes these guys significantly better.  If Funchess is real and KB picks up where he left off and olsen fends off father time and ginn brown hill and whoever can carve out roles to contribute its a top flight group.  A lot of ifs but nothing unreasonable

Can you have the #1 offense in the NFL with no above average receivers?

Doesnt hurt to have 1,000 TE, 999.99 yds RB , and the greates dual threat QB.

Panthers are going to have the most complete Offense with the ability to attack the defense on any portion of the field weather it is ground and pound by J-Stew & Tugboat,  attacking you deep and outside the # with KB, DF, &  Ginn or working Middle of the Field by Olsen & Sandland.

He was a 4th in SF and Arizona, and the Dolphins didn't want him. Cam maxed him out last season.
