Godfrey a liability?

We haven't adequately addressed the free safety position since Deon Grant departed for Jacksonville. Chris Harris was a fantastic stop gap player and did some big things, but it may be time to retool the entire secondary save Gamble, who I think would be a lot better with help over the top.

We need to spend a first round pick on an honest to God first round caliber safety. Not some CB converted "tools minus the toolbox" players we've invested into the past few years. Playing S requires a certain set of skills and experience that neither Godfrey or Martin have. If we're going to develop either, then we're going to have to take some big time lumps to do it.

I don't see anything at all worth salvaging in Godfrey. He must practice REALLY well to keep getting this kind of trust thrown his way.

I can't imagine how much better our defense would be today had we signed Brian Dawkins. He could hold up for at least a year or two while we drafted and developed his replacement.

godfrey wasn't the problem. the panthes can't cover tight ends. the panthers cant stop short passes. they give a cushion and have too many holes.

it is a systemic problem.

godfrey did better tackling than he has all year but then my expectations for him was low after seeing him in preseason.

i dont understand why they won't put him back at corner, and put or 2nd rounder at the free........ the whole d looked bad, the corners are still playing that soft coverage.bend but don't break looks too familiar to have a new dc.........

I think it is time for all those this offseason who were in denial realize that this is FOX's D scheme.....Meeks was brought in to run a version of it. The soft coverage is what Fox wants......he prefers a slow bleeding defense and just hopes teams make some huge errors while they slowly pick us apart.

How many sacks did the Panthers have today? How many times was Ryan pressured? How many hits did Ryan take? Answer: The guy had all day long to throw.

This is why our secondary looks horrible. No pressure on the QB = big problems in the secondary.

The Panthers went to the SuperBowl with starting CB's of Reggie Howard and Terry Cousins. Howard and Cousins were average at best CB's but they looked like probowlers because of the Panthers front 4 (Rucker, Peppers, Buckner, and K. Jenkins) provided constant pressure on the QB.

Back when fox's philosophy was the unwritten code of the NFL. now it's crap unless your front 4 is All-Pro worthy like the giants you've got to generate pressure no matter how to win.

Godfrey tackled really well today. I don't think the offense focused on taking Gonzalez away enough, but I am not sure if you can with Turner. Ryan gets the ball out of his hands fairly quickly and was pretty decisive all day. It more of an overall defensive philosophy than problem with players themselves.
