Contract negotiations with Kurt Coleman

No big deal.  Do not pay people based on a freak season. I would give Coleman an extension at about $2.5 m per if he wants security--no more.  If he has a good season, he will be 30, so maybe a 2 year extension.

Marcus Ball, Dean Marlowe--I'd like to see more of them before paying him.

Hope to see him stick around.  If he's about that money, he'll play another year in our system and fleece another team.  If he wants to make good money, but be part of a winning organization, he'll take a decent deal from us now.  Hopefully the latter. He's a great fit for our defense, but Gettleman has shown that he can find safeties that are plug and play for our system without breaking the bank.

Plus, I'd assume most of any teams top big plays they give up means the free safety is getting beat. Since he's the last guy..?

For comparison, the Broncos and Seahawks defense gave up 6 plays for 40 or more yards. The Bucs and Falcons only gave up 6 plays for 40+ yards. The Panthers gave up 11 plays for 40+ yards, and 10 of those plays were in the passing game. Thankfully, the Panthers front 7 did a great job at keeping running plays from getting to the third level.

The Panthers were the 3rd worst team in the NFL in TD% on plays of 40+ yards.

Coleman was one of a handful of FS who were out paced in tackles on deep plays by their CBs. Coleman only accounted for 1 tackle on 10 passing plays of 40+ yards. Keep in mind he was targeted on most of them too.

He is barely worth what the Panthers paid him in 2015. He is worth even less as a SS with his poor angles, inconsistent tackling and slow read/reaction.

Good god, no one is saying the guy is Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu or Earl Thomas.  He's an above average safety in our defense, much like Mike Mitchell was.  We'd be wise to pay him as an above average safety because he's relatively young and that's what he is for us.  Plus, by all accounts he's a great guy and great presence in the locker room.  We need some steady veteran presence and leadership in the secondary with all the youth we have at CB.  If he wants to cash in like Mitchell did, then let some other team write that check.  But, if he's willing to sign a decent deal right now to stay with us, let's do it.  Judging by Gettleman's pre-draft comments, the revolving door in the secondary isn't something he wants to have to keep repeating.

Let's look at the facts.  Coleman is a 28 year old, 7th round draft pick on his 4th team.  He worked his way into our starting rotation and put together a great year.

His character and work ethic define our defense and he is THE veteran in the secondary.

All that being said, 3 year 24.5 MIL (5 MIL signing) 6.5 per year. With 20% guarunteed.

I am interested to see if Gettleman continues his trend of letting many folks go and trying to constantly fill in with guys he picks up like he did Coleman. It was needed when we were cap strapped but what about now when we have a lot of money to spend.

When a team is winning every game, the opposing team is usually throwing the ball all around in a frantic desperate attempt to get back in it. That's why winning teams generally have the most rush attempts and worse pass defenses. Big plays are partially a function of the score. It's not the only function but it is a variable that needs to be considered.

I expected Coleman to chase the money on a different team after this season, given that he hasn't had his huge payday in his career yet. Would love to get him for around 5mill a year, on a 3 (maximum 4) year deal. However, I'm afraid DG must dig sligthly deeper in his pockets to make it happen. If Coleman is signed, that leaves only KK and Norwell to extend this summer in my eyes. And neither is a must, since we can keep KK with the tag and Norwell will be a RFA. Can't see any other upcoming FAs in 2017 worth signing now. Maybe Addison, and I don't count Klein since he propably wan't be a starter for a different team
