Contract negotiations with Kurt Coleman

Give him 5-5.5 million per year for the next 5 years. Puts him in top 15-20 safeties salary range. He's not a 1st team All Pro but he's a very solid safety who can play both safety positions and is a leader in the secondary.

He's a 2nd team All-Pro though. He got shafted.

I'd like to see another year of good play, but you're basically setting yourself up for him to outplay his current value and poof, he's gone in FA. The INT numbers will come back down to Earth this year (he probably gets 2 or 3), so maybe that would drive his value down to some since perception can be everything. It's a tough call, and while I'd like to keep him...I'm not comfortable paying him what the open market would probably give him with another Pro-Bowl level year.

Kurt brings experience, an understanding of our defense, and total commitment to our team. He lacks... well we've all seen receivers run by him, so we know he's no rare talent or anything. He's kind of a jag with experience. No idea what he's worth dollar wise, but Gettleman can play hard ball if he wants.

"Quite a bit?" Nah.

He was solid by any measure.

55 solo tackles, 35 Assists, 1 sack, and 7 INTs. We haven't had that kind of play at safety in a while. The INTs in particular are game changing. Three mil per year is a small price to pay for that production. Maybe even four depending upon garauntees and contract structure. A modest raise is in order, especially considering that we probably aren't going to do any better regarding value and experience in such an inexperienced secondary.

I'll put it this way: if we can get Coleman for 4 mil per year, for three or four years, it will be a good contract. Less than that is great!

I would even take him at $5M or $6M per year on a 3 year deal. Mitchell got 5 years $25M from the Steelers and Coleman was much better than him in their respective years here. And I don't think Piss-burgh overpaid for Mitchell, he's been solid there. Coleman's better. That being said, I wouldn't worry a whole lot if Coleman walks after this year. I love him but it's been pretty clear under Rivera, McD and Wilks we can make do with what we've got when it comes to the secondary. I'd love to have another young safety to solidify our secondary group along with (hopefully) Tre and the rookie corners. If Coleman ends up being a part of that then I'm thrilled, but I wouldn't panic if we have to let him get paid somewhere else.

I would. Remember Godfrey?

Here are 9 reasons I doubt Kurt Coleman will hold up without a CB that can take away 1/3rd of the field.:

1. Julio Jones: Kurt Coleman falls on his face while trying to stay on Julio's hip. This allows Julio to get over top Kuechly and gives up 70 yard TD.

2. Ryan Matthews: After KK messes up his assignment allowing Matthews to cut back on Kuechly, Kurt Coleman takes a horrible angle and allows Matthews to run by him untouched for a 63 yard TD.

3. DeSean Jackson: Coleman has deep coverage over the top of Colin Jones who is on Jackson at the line. Coleman gets caught looking into the backfield and allows Jackson to get deep by taking the wrong angle for a 56 yard TD.

4. Brandin Cooks: Coleman has Cooks run directly at him in deep coverage and allows Cooks to get on top of him for a 54 yard TD.

5. Randall Cobb: Coleman is deep to help Bene on Cobb in the slot. Cobb runs a wheel route and Bene stays underneath. Coleman is late to recognize the route and takes an incorrect angle to get position on Cobb. Cobb blows the top off of Coleman for a 53 yard TD.

6. Nate Washington: Coleman is slow/late rotating over top of Washtington as he runs up the slot. Washignton gets by Tillman with a double move and runs right by Coleman for a 48 yard pick up before he stumbles to the ground untouched.

7.  Julio Jones: Coleman has Jones over the top. Bene gets beat on the line by Jones and Coleman takes the wrong angle and gets turned around as Jones crosses the field. Jones ends up with a 46 yard catch.

8. Jimmy Graham: Coleman lacks the speed to get to the sideline while Graham beats Harper on a deep fade route for 45 yards.

9. Ricardo Lockette: Coleman is challenged up the slot again. Lockette uses his speed to get behind Coleman and catches a 40 yard TD.

Those are the 9 biggest plays given up by the Panthers. They all involve Kurt Coleman making mistakes/getting beat. Giving Coleman a big contract is a waste of money. He is going to cash in and max out his value. Let him do it elsewhere.

Eh, I get what you're saying but those are plays by what some consider the best in the league.  No one is saying to give him a max contact.  Like someone said, the tag is around $10 million.  I'm my opinion, giving him half of that per year (or less) is worth those 9 plays. After all, he wasn't the only one who made a mistake during those plays.

If every safety was let go because they gave up big plays to one of Jimmy Graham, Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb and Julio Jones there wouldn't be a safety on any active roster.
