Possible trade scenarios?

WR is a very interesting position for the Panther's this preseason.  It appears KB, Funchess, Hill, and Ginn are early favorites for the starting rotation, leaving players like Bersin, Philly Brown, Damiere Byrd, LaRon Byrd, Keyarris Garrett, and Kevin Norwood competing for the 5th and possibly final spot on the roster.  If the young talent impresses, some of the more seasoned vets could be offered up as trade bait.  I'm looking at you Bersin and Brown.

Hill had some praised but he isn't favorite over Brown.

I think you may be looking at some players through a Panthers fans' lens. I seriously doubt anyone would make a trade for any of the players you mentioned besides Short and maybe Klein (both of whom I would be surprised to see in a trade this season). The others are either not a priority until later in the season perhaps when someone gets hurt, or guys that could possibly be "stolen" from the practice squad, and that's even if a team would deem them to have more upside than what's on their active roster.

Just my opinion, though. I'm sure Getty has a better pulse of what the reality is personnel-wise in the league, and if he can make something happen, he will if he deems it necessary.

I don't know, G-man traded a 7 for Norwood who had never done anything in the NFL. Philly, Love, or Fozzy could be worth a later round pick if a team needed that position and was afraid that they wouldn't clear waivers. KK and AJ are to valuable to trade IMO.

BTW, how many cool names can be in 1 post?

That was my reaction as well....

Then I remembered that we traded for Norwell who was even less experienced than Bersin, but was a guy we'd liked in the draft.  But KB just had gone down, Funch was dealing with injuries, and so our depth at WR was a HUGE HUGE question......   So, obviously, in the right circumstances, a smart WR like Bersin with starting experience could be valuable to some other team.

But it has to be the right circumstances.... a team near the bottom of the waiver wire with a very specific need at a position.  Exactly what we were last August.

Otherwise, most teams will wait for cuts.

Oh... and Kyle Love:  hard to imagine him being desirable in a trade when he was out there on the market as a free agent earlier this season for a few weeks before we re-signed him.  Obviously the interest was not high in the Spring.  But circumstances change, injuries happen.... maybe some team will have a hole at DT and really want a guy like him.  It happens.

I hope some of the good players we're going to have to cut will find good situations on other teams.   If we can get some compensation for them, even better.  But I'm certainly not expecting much in the way of trades.

Norwell was an undrafted free agent.  Acquiring upside on the cheap is not only Getty's specialty, it is the preferred way by all GMs.

Oops, sorry, I meant Norwood.  I hadn't had coffee yet when I wrote that!  Will go back and correct.

Bersin was cut last year and cleared waivers to land on the PS.

Now he is trade bait?

Oh, huddle. I adore you.

On an off note, McClain was cut, cleared waivers, and landed on the couch...where he stayed...until we came calling out of necessity. Now some are lauding him as legit starter material. I ain't buying that either.

Oh, OK. I normally would have caught that. I have some cobwebs going on too (amid trying to recuperate from the last three and a half days at Myrtle Beach). It was short this year, so we had to get it in. Now I am taking my day of rest before getting back on the grind.

I agree he is not starter material. If they Panthers were not desperate at corner, he wouldn't be in camp.

The Panthers are loaded with talent.  I can't remember a time in Panther history when we were so loaded at a number of positions.  Given that a number of our cuts will likely get picked up by other teams, we are in a very interesting position to trade some of our excess talent before they get released. This is not a crazy idea around the league, just not something the Panthers have been in a position to do before.  Teams lower on the waiver wire are often willing to give up draft picks for a quality player.

The most obvious position we could unload some talent from is DT.  We are all aware that Short is in the final year of his deal and one of the top players at his position.  He would likely fetch a good draft pick.  Even if Short does sign, that leaves at least 5 quality NFL starters at a position we will likely only keep 4.  With Butler, Star, Soliai, and Short the most likely starting rotation, Kyle Love could be traded.

TE is another position stacked with young talent.  Greg Olsen is a lock of course, which leaves Beau Sandland, Scott Simonson, Marcus Lucas, Braxton Deaver, and Ed Dickson competing for TE2.  If the Panthers like what they see out of their young talent, Ed Dickson who is signed through 2017 could be on the trade block.

LB is completely stacked as well.  Davis, Kuechly, and Shaq are solidified as the starters.  However, Jeremy Cash, Ben Jacobs, David Mayo, and A.J. Klein are competing for backup roles and special teams duties.  A.J. Klein, who is in the final year of his contract, would bring in the most value.  But would the team risk not having him as Luke's backup?

Finally we come to the RB position.  Stewart is obviously entrenched as the starter.  CAP, Wegher, Fozzy, and Simmons are competing for the backup roles.  If the young players live up to expectations in the preseason, Fozzy, who is in the final year of his contract, could be traded.

With an abundance of talent on the roster, Gettleman is going to have to make some very tough decisions after preseason.  These decisions would be a lot easier if we were to receive compensation for letting someone go. Trading for draft picks, a veteran CB, or backup LT is clearly an option at this point.   Hopefully Gettleman is weighing these options.

These are good problems to have as some good names won't stick. Not sure what value we can get simply because other GM s are aware of our situation.

Question becomes is there a GM enamoured enough with Ed Dickson (example) to trade for him or would the GM take his chances on getting Dickson after cuts or another player who is comparable.

I think a lot of the guys mentioned have value it's probably a lot more complicated than it sounds

I do not think we trade anyone, but if you want to trade, you have to offer value.. I am not sure we have that player, but for example, let's say we trade Kelvin Benjamin.  (What? You Crazy !!! Ok, move on for the sake of conversation) Hear me out.  We have 5 WRs who are stepping up and we already know we can succeed without him.  Having Kelvin on the sideline actually made Cam a better QB, disbursing the ball to many different targets in 2015.  We could go with Funchess, Ginn, Brown, Hill, and maybe Byrd, Garrett, etc. We are still better than we were last year, and we got a second rounder for Benji.  Smart move?

Why is this a thread...You don't trade your depth away, it's the NFL you're always an injury or two away in any position group from going from great >> below avg. Having to cut players that are quality is something winning franchises have to do. No team is going to trade for a player you'll have to cut (see Eugene Monroe).

Beyond that what is the point trading a known commodity for an unknown which will likely be a 5th-7th rounder...that's Madden GM mentality at it's finest.

    • This has been every game this year. We get blown out and have to come back.
    • The really frustrating thing is that Hubert knows why he has to do scheme wise with this roster he just doesn't want to do it until we're down big and he's forced to do it then we come roaring back. Just do the damn thing from the get go. fug how you want to play ideally. Good coaches adapt their schemes to the talent they have. We have a lot of talent we just lack any post presence on either end of the court. Press and get after it from the opening tipoff and stop waiting until you're down 20 to do it.
