CBS Sports: is Panthers gm ruffling feathers

Sounds like a lot of speculation to me. The players love to be here, their words and actions confirm that

And agents are just that - Agents. They are agents of the player. So their opinion of the GM means squat. They negotiate the best value they can for a player which is some combination of money and environment ... Players have shown that they are more than happy with the Panthers' environment.

The author's first sentence told me all I needed to know- ".... will never make sense to me." You don't have to agree with the decision, but if you're convinced it'll never make sense to you, then you're either a dumbass or your mind is closed. Either way, it makes his opinion not worth reading for me, so I won't waste my time with it.

What I see is that the Panthers are a team you want to play for if you want to win, and not the team to consider if all you want is to be the highest paid player at your position. And that philosophy is fine with me.

I don't care if the agents get but hurt. Say what you want to about the players, they want to play for us.

CJ admitted to almost firing his agent for playing hardball, and came back for significantly less money that the Giants (am I right om the team?) offered. Norman was flat out pissed when his agent screwed him out of a long term deal and wanted back in to Carolina (for 2 days anyway). Throw in veterans like Peanut, Harper, & Finnegan wanting to come back and it tells you that we have something special going on in Charlotte.

A team still needs to invest their money to get a return for the future. Just sitting on a mound of money is pointless and unproductive. The Panthers do not even try to get value back for players they believe they will let walk under Gettleman's watch.

Who was the last tag and trade player?

If you only knew.

The locker room is 'family'. The front office is 'business'. The front office is not even close to being considered 'family' by the players. There is a great divide and distrust between the two regarding the Panthers organization. The disruptive force on this team is squarely on the front office, and it continues to get worse.

This is utter bullshit, and cannot be substantiated in any way.  The exact opposite can be though.

Panthers have trouble signing big names. It is not that they do not want to sign them in the off season - especially now with money to spend. Gettleman has consistently failed in negotiations with all of them. They have tried to land some, but it always falls through since Gettleman is now a target to be used as leverage by players/agents around the league. Not to mention most players/agents, if not all, distrust Gettleman. It would be very difficult to find player/agent who has any type of strong rapport with Gettleman.

The Panthers have trouble signing big names?  Like Ndamukong, or Hoomanawanui?  Or small names like Greg, Cam, or Ryan?  Does the size of the name matter if they are expensive and can't play?  Oh, you mean good players.....sorry...like TD, Luke, Cam, Greg, Ryan, etc...yea we do struggle with those.

Charles Johnson took less money to come back to be part of the 'family' and to give it one more year with a defense that was going to be the same. He was led to believe by the front office (like many of the other players taking a discount this season) that Norman was going to be around for at least one more season. They signed for discounts after Norman was tagged. Players/agents feel they were lied to and misled into playing for less this season. Some even believe the front office never intended to sign Norman if he would not give the team a major discount. They believe it was a ploy to get several players to stay with the Panthers and sign 1 year contracts for much less than what they would receive elsewhere.

Again bullshit.  Had Josh signed the tag, he is here, and I can promise you that under no circumstances did DG promise anyone that crap.  Also, who is "they" did more than one defensive starter sign a short term deal for less than market value that I'm forgetting about?

It is only going to get worse with the front office. I just hope Cam, Olsen, Luke and Davis can continue to carry the team and win in spite of the front office's ineptitude during the off season.

You are really stepping out on a limb here CP...we will have to cut good players, we won't be able to sign some fan favorites....you know why?  We are in this for the long haul, not the next 20 minutes.  Grow up, learn how the salary cap works, and pay attention to what the most consistent teams in the league do....hint....it's not "win the offseason".

Not sure why I do this, but I'm kinda bored sitting at my desk this morning.....

It's really quite unbelievable how inept his thought process must be, to truly believe what he does.  I can't wrap my mind around how incredibly fuging dumb it is to devise, and wholeheartedly subscribe to, a theory that suggests players are taking discounts, solely on the presence of a single guy.  It's laughable how almost 100% of the poo he spews, easily contradicts itself.

really who the hell would do that

they're sacrificing a year of their careers and putting their health at risk playing a dangerous game and the only reason they're doing it is supposedly because of one. franchise. tagged. player. who isn't even guaranteed to be here next year and by all indications probably wouldn't have been anyway.  oh they hate the front office and can barely stand the stench of gettleidiot but are willing to hold their nose because of one dude who frequently drew the ire of the leaders of the defense and coaching staff during games.  who hadn't even signed his franchise tender.

so basically the only reason anybody is here is because they were sold a bill of goods about josh norman.  what a crock of poo.

really you could tell me charles johnson came back for less money because there's a broken coke machine that releases two cans instead of one sometimes and i'd believe that over the josh norman story.

Had one of those coke machines at a dealership I did some time at. Loved that machine! !

The point of the article is, it was unnecessary to say the stuff about how agents can't scare him. That might be valid.

But to his credit Gettleman took an underachieving team to the playoffs in one season and to the Superbowl in three by making tough decisions and lighting a fire under players. Gettleman constantly reiterates that he makes moves based on cost and evaluation. I don't think he's lost that edge by bringing in cheap and hungry young players over and over instead of dishing out huge contracts. He always seems to be a step ahead of the game.

2014 - WTF are you doing drafting Kony Ealy we're stacked at DE! One month later, oh poo Greg Hardy beat his GF...

2016 - WTF are you doing drafting Vernon Butler we're stacked at DT! Oh Kawaan Short wants too much money and is gone next season...

I've never seen someone put so much effort into writing something just to get people to call them an idiot.

If this is how he gets his jollies, the guy must have the most pathetic life in existence.

Much like how the Steve Smith fiasco played out, it would probably serve all parties best to avoid discussing anything in relation to Josh Norman at this point.

The sports media is going to do what they do regardless.

Gettleman is doing fantastic work overall, it's an awesome time to be a Panthers fan. But a GM doesn't have to toot his own horn. Just let the results do the talking. That's generally the approach our team takes as well.
