Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton believes LeBron James is the best basketball player in the world, not noted Panthers fan Stephen Curry.

Newton made the comments on WFNZ’s The Mac Attack show.

Curry’s Warriors entered Thursday leading James’s Cavaliers 2–1 in the NBA Finals, having already defeated LeBron’s Cavs in last year’s championship round. Curry is also the NBA’s reigning MVP, but Newton believes James is still the better player.

“A person asked me, ‘Well, is Steph Curry the best basketball player on the planet?’” Newton said. "I said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the best team on the planet.’

“I still think LeBron is [the best player]. He’s 6-7, athletic, can do anything on the court. But LeBron is not on the best team. Going back to what I was saying, the power of team will always be better than the power of skill.”

Newton is also the reigning MVP in his sport. The former Auburn star led the Panthers to a 15–1 record and Super Bowl appearance last season.

Honestly, who cares what Cam thinks about basketball. In a one on one LeBron would crush Steph. And he'll out rebound him and out defend him nearly every game. They play two different positions and couldn't have less similar playing styles. It would be like comparing DeSean Jackson to Gronk. The better question would be which would you rather have on your team. If I could only pick one player I wouldn't pick either of them but if between the two I'd rather have Steph.

this. I would say Curry is the best pure scorer in the NBA as well.

And that'd statement would still be false. Curry's the best shooter in the league. But, he doesn't have a better ALL around scoring game than Melo or Durant. All is capitalized because curry's not going to back anyone down and give them 20 from the low block with turn around jumpers,so technically I wouldn't say best pure scorer. Best shooter absolutely.

led the league in scoring this year and I would bet that he is gonna do it again next year. Durant would be my next choice for best scorer. Curry has a very underrated inside game, just because he doesn't back someone down on the post doesn't mean he can't score inside. His FG% within 5 feet was the one of the highest in the NBA last year (if not the highest)

    • Really?  Back to this again? How many times have I said that I’d prefer to trade back from #1? Too many to count, but as I’ve pointed out, that’s going to be much easier said than done, as once we signal we want to trade back, teams will know we don’t want any of the QBs and they’d target the 2nd pick in a trade instead. All of my “T-Mac at #1” talk has been discussed under two circumstances… the first being that no QB or DE pop before the draft, and that we can’t trade back. But again, I know you don’t like to actually read that stuff when I say it, as I’ve said it numerous times.
    • Thanks for posting this. While this was far from a great performance, this critique shows what some of us noticed last week. Bryce played "a little better". There is some talent there. But, as you pointed out we really don't have a great pass blocking line for dropping back each down when we are behind. BY has got some bad habits and physical limitations. At times his teammates let him down. The play calling isn't always the best. I hope he can learn from last week and show us some improvement in the Saints game.
    • Oh, and yes, I’d take a WR first in this upcoming draft, but again, that’s not in a vacuum I wouldn’t have taken him over the QBs this past year or likely the ones next year either. It’s all relative to who is available in a specific draft, and I don’t think any of the QB’s are worth the risk at #1 this year. Also the fact that you’ve said you would take T-Mac #2 but scoff at him going #1 is just in itself, super weird.  How you can justify a player at #2 but not #1 solely because of their position and with complete disregard to the other players available, is absolutely crazy town talk
