And it helps get a higher comp pick

The ultimate "oh poo" scenario would be Nortman, for whatever reason, getting waived by Jacksonville. Unlikely as that may be, it would effectively cost us a third unless we cut Gradkowski. Frankly I wouldn't mind dumping Gradkowski anyway, just to be sure, and likely grab an extra seventh in the process.

That and he had a scary habit of way outkicking his coverage. That's how you get one taken to the house on you.

Also a fair point, though I think we would've kept him at a reasonable rate. But then Jacksonville just blew it open.

Not against this, but who would be backup C in that scenario?  Velasco is signed with some other team I think (Bills?) so he's not coming back...

Via ESPN, here are some numbers about Scifres' season last year.....  Hmmmmmm.

However, Scifres had a down year in 2015. His net punting average of 38.0 yards was No. 28 in the league, and Scifres averaged just 23 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line in 2015.

Various punting stats can be found here - including punts inside the 10, punts inside the 20

ESPN also has stats on punt returns against the punter:

Remmers had worked at center last preseason, but I can't see Gradkowski getting cut.  Would he even count against the comp picks if he sees little to no snaps?

As for the punters Voth is saying Panthers weren't impressed with either punter's performance so far which prompted Scifres signing, so it might take some time to find Nortman's replacement this offseason.

Well, there are several Daryl Williams believers here. I'd say the main reason we brought back Velasco was Williams' injury effectively eliminated our backup at two positions, as we weren't able to slide Remmers over if needed.

If Williams earns the starting job, or even if he just proves himself capable enough for limited snaps, I'd feel fine with Remmers as the backup again. Ideally Williams starts and we have Remmers backing up two positions.

Alternatively, another center that gets cut in August. We probably don't have another rosterable true center on the roster.

Main factor is the contract value, and Nortman and Gradkowski both fall into the 7th round range. Play time isn't really considered unless they outplay the contract, just being on the roster is more important.

I just don't see Gradkowski as someone that's safe, as others seem to. He's never really been more than mediocre, as otherwise he'd be more than a journeyman signing near-minimum contracts. Every year Gentleman cuts UFAs before they even play a game for us - Underwood, Trusnik, and most recently Boykin come to mind - so there's no reason to think they wouldn't do it again.

Signing another center now in his place would effectively be like trading Gino for a future seventh round pick.

Out: Gradkowski

In: Another center + 2017 7th

All valid points. I just see it a little differently as I see his value isn't just being able to back up center but also to back up at guard. As of right now since we choose not to being back Amini I don't see the depth at left guard.

IIRC Scifres won a playoff game, or a big regular season game for the Chargers at one point.

Like dropped the ball inside the 10 yard line 6 times or something crazy like that.

Not to mention he is proven. Who the hell is Swayze Waters?
