In affirmation of our new CBs, you can read between the lines regarding Boykin

Nice Stuff Dawg.  From what I am reading, the Panthers never expected to find Worley sitting there in the third, and they new Philly wanted him, so they moved up and yanked the second CB off the shelf.  I would have stopped there, and I think that was the plan, but when you do a lot of research on a position, as I am sure the Panthers did, you probably had a late third or early fourth-round grade on Sanchez--and he is sitting there at the bottom of the fifth round.

Boykin was a stop-gap signing.  He is smallish and not physical, as you mention.

I really like Bradberry.  I think he will be our #1 CB by next year.  To assume Bene is the #1 (if anyone is) might be a bit presumptuous.  In fact, with his injury history, we could have 3 rookie CBs on the field at the same time.

I'm not sure that it's 100% accurate to say that Bene is better on the outside. If Worley, Bradberry or Young work out, I could see him playing more in the slot than outside.  I'm not saying it will happen, just that it could happen. He has excelled in that role for us. Otherwise, we're just assuming that Sanchez is our nickel.

I get what you're saying and agree with it in principle, but to be fair Getty did mention Sanchez in the slot. That being said, i think that it's too early to be presumptuous. I can envision a day where Bradberry and Worley are on the outside with Benwikere in the slot (which is arguably his more natural position).

Some people are assuming and presuming many things this early in the game regarding our wide receivers, several of whom who could probably play on the outside or in the slot to notable effect. I see the CB position almost a parallel to the WR spot in that regard this offseason.

Hmm. Good points.  Like the comparison to WR---I might even throw TE into that mix too--on a smaller scale.  I think Dickson is gone.  Olsen, Sandland, and .......but it won;t be Dickson (mark my words!)

An experienced vet is going to be better than a rookie, 90% of the time.  Saying adios to Boykin, before even seeing what he can do, and handing the reigns over to 3 rookies is why most people are raising an eyebrow.

Here is the deal.  We (you included) are fans.  We watch games, highlights, TV shows, youtube clips, and listen to sports talk radio.  These are a great way to get up to speed on the goings on of our favorite teams and leagues.

General Managers are an exclusive group of highly sought after talented and skilled individuals who pour their very souls into their work day in and day out.  They scour the earth for tips tricks and people that can help get their organization to the top of the mount.

Now the former suggests that the latter made a boneheaded decision on an individual player.  Which one of these two has more info to go on and who is left to merely speculate as to the reasons behind it?

My biggest takeaway is that we're determined to find round pegs to fit our round holes. Boykin was that square peg that would've sufficed short-term but became expendable when the draft netted us the pieces that the team really wanted.

Obviously, there is a risk with trotting out a trio of rookies into our secondary but we have strong leadership in our linebackers and our defensive front just got an upgrade. Couple that with a top scoring offense that will get a key player back, we can compensate for any initial struggles. I will say it's a good thing that intelligence is a key trait we look for because we will need them to pick up their roles quickly. It may be too much to ask them to play at the level of a defensive rookie of the year but if they can at least maintain their assignments, we may not have that much of a dropoff.

There was a great deal of draft talk about the DL prospects being the best in a decade but according to Steelers GM Kevin Colbert (on Sirius) who has been in scouting since 1984, this was the best CB class in 30 years.  He said there will be solid starters from round 1 thru 5.  Seems fairly obvious to me that Gman saw the same thing and triple dipped, not from a position of weakness, but of strength.  He wasn't just filling a need, he was drafting future starters.

Also for the record Gettman said sometime during Superbowl week when a question about Oher came up, he made a comment that he had watched 3 years worth of previous games of his to decide if wanted to sign him. So dnt think for a second he didn't know what he had(or didn't have) in Boykin.
