In affirmation of our new CBs, you can read between the lines regarding Boykin

Steve Wilks is obviously pretty excited about the Panthers' new crop of corners just like Ron Rivera and Dave Gettleman. Bryan Strickland's article is basically just more of a confirmation of what we already know. That's not a newsflash. But listening to Wilks and the players should further allay any fears that our defensive backfield has "the juice" to compete at the highest levels.

Quote

"You don't want to buy a car on the internet. You want to be able to test drive it, kick the wheels. That's what we do," Wilks said. "We get to take these young men out to eat dinner and get to know them personally, and we get them on the board to see what they can retain. We get a real true evaluation."

Wilks spent time with all three corners on pre-draft visits to Bank of America Stadium and hit the road for private workouts with Bradberry and Worley, while assistant defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller went to Oklahoma and spent time with Sanchez.

That time together helped seal what Wilks thought he already knew based on film study and the measurables posted by the trio – that they had the qualities Carolina covets in cornerbacks.

"They're smart. They're long. They can run. They're physical. That's what we like about them," Wilks said. "Right now they're just going through the process.

"I think it's going to be an easy transition. They've just got to get up to speed."

The part of Wilks' quote that I zeroed in on was, "They're smart. They're long. They can run. They're physical."

Many people may still be wondering why we deep-sixed Brandon Boykin. Well, there is your answer.  It's not that Bokin was a bad guy, or that he had some weird locker room or off-field issues. He just didn't fit the Carolina profile for a cornerback.

Now I'm not saying that Boykin isn't smart. He seems smart enough. I'm not saying that he doesn't have adequate wheels Dude ran a 4.4 40 before he entered the league. But what I am saying is that he is definitely not long, and he certainly is not physical. It would seem that with Carolina's commitment to finding smart CBs to Gettleman's liking, that you have to be long and strong to make Charlotte your home. Boykin was neither. Even the acquisition of Shaq Richardson---who is here while Boykin is not---is further evidence that our corners will need to fit that profile to really have any chance with the team.

Meanwhile, in Bizarro World, Robert McClain is still a mystery.

Agreed. I never seen so many people make a big deal on a player who ultimately didn't matter. Never played a snap for us, signed a minimal contract and is on his way to his 4th team in 2 years for a reason. Boykin was simply insurance in case the draft didn't shake out the way we wanted it to. Once it did he was expendable

Silly top dawg.

You just don't understand that Gettleman cut Boykin for no reason at all outside of his evil need to make things harder for his coaches and piss off Carolina fans.

Didn't you know that?

Some people will never get it...

An experienced vet is going to be better than a rookie, 90% of the time.  Saying adios to Boykin, before even seeing what he can do, and handing the reigns over to 3 rookies is why most people are raising an eyebrow.  I understand the argument about coaching players for other teams, or taking playing/learning time away from the rookies that are your future.  But, you need guys with experience on the field that can play at a higher level while the rookies over come the learning curve.  But, on to training camp.   What's done is done.

We drafted Bene who doesn't fit the long mold. I get your point though.

5'11" with 30" arms and a 40.5" vertical. Josh is 6'0" with 32.75" arms and a 33" vertical. Bene is long.

Since you're not qualifying that statement at all, it means any veteran CB will be better than any rookie CB, 9 times out of ten, which is a ridiculous claim in view of all the marginal CB's out there.

we drafted him thinking he would be our slot CB but he actually ended up being a better outside corner.

I'm not sure that it's 100% accurate to say that Bene is better on the outside. If Worley, Bradberry or Young work out, I could see him playing more in the slot than outside.  I'm not saying it will happen, just that it could happen. He has excelled in that role for us. Otherwise, we're just assuming that Sanchez is our nickel.

I like Bene better on the outside.

He is also recovering from injury and the surgery that followed. Drafting a bit of insurance and competition is never a bad thing.
