credit card problem

So, I stopped at Lowe's after work and tried to spend $40.  My credit card was declined.  Impossible.  I figured the chip was malfunctioning.  Called the credit card company.

Seems my card was used in Tyrone, PA today for $154.56 at 131pm.  They must have detected fraud.  No...they did not call me...just let me get declined. (I was in NC all day...card in my possession).

I called the place it was used.  It is a convenience store.  They do not do transactions by phone. The clerk remembers this transaction because it was unusually large for them.  Said a guy named Tyrone bought 20 packs of cigs (thus the fraud alert) and some other stuff.  His 1st card was declined.  So he pulled out another with my account # and his name on it.  Clerk said she checked his ID because they have had problems there. Also said the card looked funny.  They do not have a chip reader so he just slid the card.

I will not have to pay this of course.  Just wondering how this poo happens.  Also funny....did you catch that Tyrone used this card in Tyrone?

At some point, your credit card information was stolen.  There are a number of ways this can be done.  If you use it at a restaurant and the waiter or waitress steals the number and sells it.  Or one of the aforementioned scanners.  Or they may have hacked into a company that stores credit card information.  Or probably other ways I am forgetting.

The bank that issue the card detected the activity, declared it as suspicious, and froze your account.  They would have notified you eventually, but usually 24-48 hours afterward, by phone, email, or sometimes postal mail.  Depends on their arrangements.

Eventually, the US will move completely to the chip system, which might cut down on these types of things.   But Hackers will eventually find ways around those as well.  Best thing to do is keep a constant watch on all your cards.  I log into online banking/credit cards usually once a day just to look at transactions.  And I order a new credit card/card number about every 18 months or so.

Happened to me a couple months back. I didn't get the phone call from the bank because I was declined trying to get gas at 2 stations before I realized it was the card and not the pump. Called the bank and they asked if I'd been in Florida that morning....

Anyway, no worries, but having to wait a couple weeks for the new card is just a pain in the ass when I'm not used to carrying any cash.

I bought a camera in Cali and some kind of trip in Fla at the same time once. The girl at the bank asked me if I had been to Tampa that day.

So your card has a chip in it and it was still compromised?  These new chip cards are annoying as hell and serve no purpose that I can see other than holding up a line.  I think the banks sent out these new cards just so business' would have to buy new card readers.

I had a debit card and a credit card compromised within a month after christmas.  One was used in virginia, but one was used in antayla, turkey.  Both with in-person transactions.

Unless you were in PA recently, Tyrone probably bought your info from a hacker and made a fake credit card with it. Make sure you change your passwords and check your computer for malware.

yeah this is probably what happened

someone can buy a mag stripe encoder for a hundred bucks and they're off and running

Same.

Had 3 in 3 weeks.  2 CC's and a DC.

I now have it setup to send me an email every time there is a transaction.  A little annoying, but better than getting declined while in a hurry.

I just had this happen two weeks ago on my new chip card. Since you still have to swipe at so many places, the chip part isn't secure yet.

The person(s) using my CC# are very local. They hit gas stations, McDs, & autozone that are all within 10 miles of me. they had two days of fun before I locked it down. (since it was very local it didn't trigger fraud at first) Already marked the fraudulent charges and they've been refunded. They got ~$200 of stuff. My biggest CC fraud was in 2003. Someone got my # and then bought stuff in NYC cosmetic stores. total $2k.
