My first thought when the move was made was Gettleman wanted to make sure we get a third round comp pick for Norman. Boykin may have qualified with playing time had he not been cut. Now we may even get an extra 7th if Gradkowski doesn't qualify.

The math had already been done and we would've gotten a 3rd with Boykin on the team. Nothing he did or did not do would matter.

If we cut him to ensure we would get a 7th round comp pick then people on the front office need to start losing jobs right now.

This is so similar to the WR house cleaning following the 2013 off season without the infusion of veteran players. This secondary is now even more inexperienced than the 2004 secondary with 1 vet, 3 second year players and 2 rookies - Chris Gamble, Ricky Manning, Mike Minter, Colin Branch, Dante Wesley and Vinny Ciurciu. I believe 2016 is now the most inexperienced secondary in Panthers history.

We all know Ron Rivera does not trust rookies and young players - especially in the secondary. Rivera would have leaned on Boykin all season until he was cut ala Antoine Cason.

There is a history of Gettleman lobbying for his young drafted players to get more playing time while Rivera is resistant. Ealy, Bene, and Boston are prime examples. Rivera did not trust any of them to carry out their responsibilities and leaned on used up/injured vets whenever possible in Harper, Coleman, Tillman, and Allen.

Well a GM who wants his young guys to get playing time can make that happen by not giving the head coach any other option. I imagine we will see this come to a head when the young guys keep making mistakes and getting beat. Rivera will demand veteran help when the mistakes start happening and the front office will go scrambling for more patchwork Jared Allen/Cortland Finnegan type players during the season.

Was that year we won the division? Or was it the year we won the division?

what metric are we using here to gauge success and failure?

Super bowl championships.

Nobody here really cares about being the best loser. In fact, most concerning of all is that team continues to come up short against the big boys because of weaknesses in areas where everybody knew would cost us beforehand.

Great teams don't build themselves to make the playoffs. Its the cutthroat moves they make upon falling short to push themselves to victory that makes them great. The panthers are aiming more for Atlanta braves than new england patriots.

Not necessarily.  From what I have found on the formula for comp picks is that playing time and snaps played are taken into account and if you play enough snaps during the season you are counted regardless of salary. Also if an injury happens they are counted.

I remember Dominic Hixson counting for us a few years ago after an injury in preseason with the Bears even with him having a minimum salary that normally wouldn't count.

Boykin getting cut was actually a predictable move, but the timing is a little surprising.  When we signed him, I believe Norman was still here.  So the plan was to have Norman and Bene on the outside, with Boykin at the nickel.  Once Norman left, a big hole was created.  There was literally no way G-man was going to have Boykin play the outside in this system.  He likes big corners, and to be truthful he's probably not all that confortable in having Bene on the outside.  So having Bene and Boykin as your two corners was out of the question.

What really cemented this move was Zack Sanchez.  When we got him, along with the other two corners we drafted where one of them will most certainly start, the writing was on the wall for Boykin.

OR MAYBE MAYBE

we intend to start our rookies and since we had promised Boykin a starting position/playing time- we were doing him a favor by letting him go seek out a starting position on a different team

IT'S WEIRD THAT WE MIGHT NOT KNOW THE WHOLE STORY THO AMIRITE

The fact that Sanchez would be penciled in as a starter at this point is surprising, though. He's done some light jogging in shorts.

Boykin MUST suck, according to the panthers. Cause this means shaq(tryout CB signed) and other Street FAs are better than him....... I know when the eagles traded him and Steelers Sat him, it was super suspicious both teams needed CBs. Knowing all that, I still thought signing him( at the cost) was a great move.

Boykin was insurance, Dave just dropped him and said anyone is better. The public sure is missing the reasons why Three heavy need CBs teams want nothing to do with boykin.

It doesn't matter what you think, there's a plan and other unquantifiable cliches that don't actually convince anybody of anything but serve to play out the string and keep people from having to confront their actual thoughts on the decision to hand the reigns over to multiple rookies because of how they looked in gym shorts doing combine exercises.

What lol

Maybe you should go cheer for the Patriots instead on clogging up the board with pessimistic bullshit.

And leave the poor masses here to wallow in their delusions? Have you no empathy? Fortunately for you I'm a better man.
