Panthers Release Boykin

Wouldn't be surprised if there's more to this story.  I don't think you cut a guy like Boykin because three rookies looked decent in non-contact drills.  Especially since Gettleman wasn't even there to see it.  Wasn't Boykin on a vet min contract?  No reason not to at least bring him to camp unless there's something off the field going on.

Theory: Dave signs Boykin for great value thinking everybody will applaud him for how smart he is, but once he realized the prevailing sentiment was "yeah, that was an obvious, necessary move. Glad that's done" he realized nobody was going to be posting things like "#gettlemagic" or "he's so smart! Take that all those teams who passed on him" Dave realized he had to try another approach.

In all seriousness we just cut loose the only player of value we added to this team this offseason.

How do you guys feel about Bene? We're putting a lot into him as our undisputed #1 corner in 2016, but I thought he was mediocre last year. Not bad, not great, just a very average cornerback.

I think Bene has shown flashes of being a fair bit better than average.  But I'd by lying if I didn't say it would seem to be less than ideal to keep Bene at Nickel when he looked so much better on the outside in 2014.   I was glad when it was announced we were going to move him outside.  Now with Boykin gone, that seems less certain, and I'm a bit concerned...

He's not proven, certainly.  But, he's definitely very mature for his age, very smart, and already showing he can mentor new guys.   I listened to all his radio interviews last year.  Awesome stuff.  Also, he played a big role in mentoring Shaq last season, if I recall..., helping him learn the playbook when Shaq still had college work to finish during OTAs.  And I think of how Ron listened to and clearly respected Bene's comments following our loss to Atlanta, (about players not being true to who they were, losing their personality).  Bene has the makings of a good locker room leader, I think.

Boykin got offers in the millions, from more than one other team.  He said so himself.  Carolina needed corners.  Carolina has gotten multiple guys from the secondary big paydays.  It's pretty evident why he chose to come here...

So we cut him so we wouldn't have to have a talented, veteran nickel CB for unproven rookie players to develop behind.

Oh the humanity.

That is completely irrelevant. Every single player gets paid. We have had 1 year guys who contributed in the past. It's a reasonable way to do things. If you want to tell me that the team decided against a one year guy from a philosophical team building I can buy that. I won't agree with it but it's a reasonable debate. Throwing out that he wasn't all in and just in it for the money is just baseless speculation at this point and irrelevant to whether or not his presence would be valuable for the upcoming season.

Not sure how you can know this in May?

Why don't you go ahead and name some names for me them.

Which game changers will better us play in and play out from what we were last year.

It's hilarious seeing everyone slowly come to terms with the fact that David Gettleman is not perfect.

Please explain how this is either perfect or not perfect before you have seen any of the rookies play a snap?
