Football outsiders NFC South predictions going into last year:

Falcons: 9-7; 10th ranked offense, 31st ranked defense
Saints: 9-7; 7th ranked offense, 30th ranked defense
Panthers: 7-9; 23rd ranked offense, 17th ranked defense
Buccaneers 6-10; 32nd ranked offense, 13th ranked defense

I think they might have been wrong guys.

Damn...you beat me to this. What a crock these guys are.

here's the link, anyway.

This is an interesting prediction. I think most sports writers are counting on Cam's success to disappear. That there is no way this Carolina team can be more than a flash in the pan.

So, I think it's as simple as some folks trying to pay their bills. Gotta get those clicks!

Every one wants us to lose , they think because we lost a fluke game to denver and atlanta that we are a 4 and 12 team that just got lucky. they think norman was the best player on our defense and losing him will make our defense look like we are the saints . we know what we are capable of and the hate is good because it gives us fans and our team some fire going into the season . ill always rather be hated by the outsiders and then media then over hyped .

Okay, here's my take, especially on the defense.

Gettleman and Rivera are long term veterans, easily able to identify potential and capabilities in their players. Both have also been proven to be able to make the hard decisions and let people go when they couldn't perform up to expectations (on the field or in the locker room). There aren't any players on the team because these guys are scared of what could happen.

Keep that in mind and look at our cap space. You don't see these guys out there combing the free agent lists and they invited none of the big namers in for looks early on. The losses of Allen, Tillman and Harper were figured in early on and they probably looked at Norman as a potential loss, too. Gettleman had already made a contingency plan for having to cut loose Norman.

That lack of panic and the calm demeanor by which they are entering the season makes me think they are feeling good about the building blocks they have to work with. Three out of four of those guys were brought in over the last couple of years (counting Harper's longevity) to bring our younger players along and be a locker room presence. They were never meant to be long term team members. And Norman, he had a surprising break out season last year, no one could have known how well he was going to do.

We're going to be fine, the blueprint is still in place and we may end up about as good as we were last year.

Only person this D will miss is Norman. Wtf allen, harper and tillman lol

I think the defensive backs will struggle early on. I'm still worried about our pass rush

I think if Garrett gets time and we go deep with him because he specializes in that, our offense will be a nightmare once again for teams. 12-4 barring injuries

All depends....not a big fan at all of Harper, old version of Peanut....

but they were savy and smart vets.  Put some undisciplined average players on a field with a iffy pass rush.....bad things happen.

Well, I for one will miss Tillman.  And I think our DBs will miss him as a mentor.  Maybe it's just that with him on the team our secondary became the thieves and we led the league in turnovers....  Still hoping he's around somehow.  Peanut, come and hang out with the guys while on the PUP list ad rehabbing the knee....!

As for this football outsiders prediction, I think they just think we'll regress to the mean of a roughly .500 team...

I look at it this way.  After our previous 12-4 or 11-5 seasons we've slipped to 7-9 or 8-8, so we've lost roughly 4 games more than the previous season.  Heck, even if that happens again this year, we'll still be 11-5.  I really see that as our absolute floor, and I think somewhere from 12-4 to 14-2 is much more likely.

Holy cow, what an idiot.

i mean it's one thing to have an opinion.  i certainly don't fault people if they think cam newton is somewhat overrated or if they otherwise aren't in lockstop with rabid panthers fans like me/most posters on this site.  i mean i probably disagree with them but whatever.

kacsmar has been tying himself in knots trying to downplay cam newton pretty much since he was drafted.  just about anything he has to say regarding our quarterback reeks of bias and pathological opposition which is especially disconcerting considering FO is supposed to be this just-the-facts data driven thing.

I agree. At this point though, if anyone says Newton is overrated, they should not be allowed to watch or talk about football ever again.
