Cam not diving for a fumble such a big deal?

Anyone who questions Cams passion or love for the game, or questions his dedication to winning have never watched Cam play other than the Super Bowl. He routinely is the most physical player on the field and he's a fuging QB. Cam carried the entire Falcons defense for 10 yards in a pretty much meaningless game this season. He might actually play too reckless and wild sometimes.

That being said, I'm surprised he didn't dive for that one, but it's not a knock on him because he didn't...

Bad choices in your poll.

I voted no, even though I don't agree with your "the game was over regardless" addition which was a bit stupid.

I voted no because it was NEVER as easy an attempt at recovery as many purport it to be.  A 6-5 guy and the ball was right at his feet?  How in the hell is he supposed to DIVE on that?  OK, he can't... but he can flop on it, right?  Do any of you short people realize just how unnatural and how difficult it is for tall people to just remove their legs out from under them in a split second and flop?

Anyone who had and continues to have a problem with Newton's actions on that play is a damn idgit.

I agree that the choices are bad in the poll and that's why I didn't vote.

In that split second Cam believed he would sustain a leg injury if he went for the ball, so he jumped back. If Cam's instincts were right and he sustained a leg injury while recovering the ball, would that have improved our chances of winning? If you watch closely, Kalil's helmet ends up right about where Cam's knee would have been if he stayed put. I don't know about you, but a shot to the side of the knee from the helmet of a diving 300 lb man doesn't sound like it would end well to me.

Add to this that QB's are taught to protect themselves and don't practice fumble recovery, so in a situation like that you're operating purely on instincts and any coaching that comes to mind is telling you to protect yourself at all costs. Based on the way he approaches the game, it's safe to assume Cam has gotten much more "protect yourself" coaching than the average QB.

I won't even address the questioning of Cam's toughness. Any honest person who has been paying attention knows he is one of the toughest players in the league... not just at his position, but in the league.

The funny thing is nobody would have expected Peyton Manning or Tom Brady to dive on that fumble and if Cam got his knee blown up like RG3 the critics would have said he needed to play smarter.

TL;DR: Haters gonna hate.

Cams gets scrutinize for not diving on the fumble but if he did he risk getting hurt and missing significant time. Either way haters win. Cams is always in a lose-lose situation with certain people.

He understands this and pays the bs no mind.

Well, if you're 5' 7" or under and 175 pounds, then it's probably not that big a deal. If you're 6' 5" and 240 pounds, you'd probably rupture your own spleen. Looked bad at the time, but the first replay told a different story.

I'm 5'7" around. Does that count?

Look, his teammate  Remmers was right there. Right as Miller dove on the ball, a 300 pound man should be able to out muscle a 250 lb linebacker for the ball, especially If they both got there around  the same time. Cam didn't want to dive in there and cause the ball to bounce awkwardly  around when his teammate had a legit chance at recovering the fumble . End of story, Remmers should have blocked  better that game, end of story. None of this poo would have happened.

If I actually agreed that he "made a business decision" I'd be irritated.

He was clearly moving for the ball when somebody came diving at his legs. Pretty instinctual from a human point of view to move your legs at that point.

Don't entertain this idiocy. The only reason the rest of the web is so obsessed with it is because its all they have left to criticize him with.
