Butler already on his way to being the complete package

On the one hand, yes it's fantastic that this guy is really smart and a man-beast. I believe this information is true. Having said that, we're never going to get information about a rookie being not so bright, or not looking promising. I guess I'm just a little tired of fluff pieces. Like let me know a little bit about the negative aspects along with the positive. Sometimes they make these rookies sound like we drafted a god at the bottom of the first round.

I got tired of watching game tapes of Big Vern getting pushed 3 to 5 yards off the line of scrimmage in the running game. After seeing his inability to hold ground in goal line packages and his tendency to get stood up, I ruled him out as an impact player on the NFL level. I also did not care for his inability to get smaller running backs on the ground immediately. He always had to wrestle with the RBs and QBs for a few seconds to get them on the ground. He tackles by gripping onto a player and trying to put his weight on the offensive runner to get their legs to give out or wait for another defender to finish the tackle. This horrible tackling technique needs to change. It will not work on the NFL level.

He is a very good bull rusher though, and if singled can collapse the pocket. I hate that the Panthers used a 1st round pick on a one trick pony when there were more valuable players available that would make a more immediate impact over the course of a season.

Welp, that settles it. Big Vern is a big bust.

Sure, Gettleman loved what he saw in him after watching every play in every game he ever played. And of course, Coach Washington and scouts visited him and put him through drills to make sure he was capable. And yeah, they at him down in the classroom and threw stuff at him he needed to immediately regurgitate.

But this guy right here saw a youtube video. Case = Closed.

Oh well.

I wonder if CPantherKing's dad had a thick Boston accent and beat him without mercy. There's got to be more to the Gettleman hate than just butt hurt over looking foolish and wrong all the time.

On the other hand. I do admire the shotgun blast approach. If he criticizes every move, he's bound to be right eventually. Part of me is looking forward to CP's big "I TOLD YOU SO!!" Moment. It will be entertaining.

The hell game tapes were you watching? I went back and rewatched the 3 games on draftbreakdown.com to make sure and if anything I saw pretty much the opposite of that. He held his ground very well in the run game only getting pushed off a yard or two when double teamed which is fine because it means whoever is double teaming him isn't getting to the second level and blocking a LB. When singled he always held his ground at the point of attack on the line of scrimmage but was bad at disengaging the block to tackle a guy right next to him but that's a technique thing that can be taught. In the pass rush, he just needs some more moves. His bull rush and wiper move are good and work well but his spin move looks like he is rooted in quicksand and he probably needs to develop a dip and rip. Biggest negatives are totally teachable and correctable issues. He's raw but deserving of a late 1st round pick.

I'm sure Butler needs some coaching up for the NFL but by all accounts he's a quick study. You can't teach power and mobility though, and he's got those traits in spades. I'm betting Butler will be boom rather than bust.

Thank God.

I was worried you would like this pick, then we would all know that he is a big bust.

I would say that the article is more about the mindset as to why the Panthers picked Butler than it it is an offering of ancillary, feel-good information. I don't get the need to question its veracity.

As for Butler,  he is a talented rookie with a transition ahead of him.  Why you wouldn't believe that he isn't physically gifted,  I don't  know (unless you're looking at some imaginary video/cut-ups).  No,  he's not perfect,  but there is ample evidence that there is markedly more good than bad. Furthermore,  even if you don't believe that he is a quick study,  the good thing is that he doesn't have to be forced into action right away,  as he has some pretty good vets ahead of him.

Lastly, find me anything that dispels the notion that Butler is anything but a respectful,  mild-mannered kid that seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders.  And do me a favor and watch his interviews, which basically confirm general thoughts about his personality, and tell me what you see.

He didn't watch any tapes. Heck, he wouldn't know what to look for if he did. He basically just makes s--t up.

His opinion isn't to be taken seriously, ever.
