Butler already on his way to being the complete package

For the few that are still wondering about the drafting of Vernon Butler, Max Henson's article, Vetting Vernon: What Carolina sees in New DT, pretty much should answer all your questions.

Butler is a huge man that moves like a smaller man, a quick learner, has a good foundation for the fundamentals of playing his position, is respectful and decidedly soft spoken off the field, but is also a competitor with a "nasty streak" on the field.  In short (no pun intended), he sounds like the perfect fit for our team. He should mesh seamlessly with the other gentle giants that we have at the position.

Then Washington and director of college scouting Don Gregory flew out to Louisiana Tech for a private workout with Butler on March 4. Washington said Butler aced the classroom work, absorbing all the information thrown at him and regurgitating it quickly.

When they went out for some work on the practice field, Washington saw firsthand the athleticism Petri was talking about.

"We have a drill that we use every day with our defensive line, and it’s called the line drill. It’s about coming off the football and attacking the line of scrimmage," Washington said. "We’re trying to gauge player’s ability to change directions against his own momentum. It’s a critical trait for a pass rusher.

"It was really obvious that he had a high level of athletic ability. It’s unusual for a man his size."

A week before the draft, the Panthers brought Butler into Bank of America Stadium for a visit. They already thought highly of him before he stepped foot in the building, and they liked him even more after his visit concluded.

"The level of maturity and his ability to retain information stood out," Washington said.

It became clear that Butler had everything the Panthers were looking for, and they were thrilled to select him with the 30th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

After hearing about how "perfect" a Panther puzzle piece that Butler seems to be, how can anyone not be anything but pleased with the pick (and, yes the alliteration was personally pleasingly purposeful)?

I always advocate alliteration. Pie for pleasantly pleasing my prerogative.

In other news, remember how Gettleman said losing Benji was his biggest fear last year, leading to the drafting of Fun-Fun? I think losing KK would be a huge blow to the defense, since no other D-lineman can do everything he does. Gettleman just did the same thing with Butler that we did with Fun-Fun.

OK, two things.  First, lets not go jinxing us before we even step foot on the practice field.  Second, can we never call him Fun-Fun again?

No such thing as jinxes, Doc. Besides, we lost Benji last year and look where we ended up. Stop de-railing the thread. This is about the big Butler, not Fun-Fun.

Prescribe yourself some chill pills, Doc. Or better yet, move down here to Florida, open a pain pill mill, and hook me up. Thanks in advance
