Rapoport: Panthers, Short engage in extension talks

really what he's doing is taking a reasonable opinion, which is "our GM won't give every good player huge guaranteed money" or thereabouts, and following it with something ridiculous.

a rational person would probably complete that sentence with "which is life in the salary cap-era NFL.  thankfully he drafts solidly and has a nice eye for cheap talent on the FA market so this team should stay competitive".  however, he would complete that sentence with "which is why all of the players and their agents hate gettleman and nobody wants to play here or sign long term extensions with him because he's a cheap arrogant bastard who probably did 9/11"

like with cpantherking and a few others it legitimately seems like their distaste for gettleman is personal.

He ruined their precious perpetual 7-9 Panthers and made them contenders! The nerve!

Almost like they named their daughter Steve and their firstborn son DeAngelo.

I am prepared for the contract negotiations to be stalled due to a lack of compromise by both parties while being far apart on contract values.

KK knows he is going to get paid Olivier Vernon type numbers. $16m to $17m per season.

Gettleman will want to pay him $7m to $9m per season.

The guaranteed money will always be the sticking point for Gettleman with all the big star players. Cam and Luke got it, but that was because they were the anchors. No one else will get the big guaranteed money. So, expect all the good players to walk and be replaced like Norman, KK, KB, Star, and Trai Turner. They all know there are teams ready to give them the guaranteed money they want.

Your only hope for those players staying with the Panthers is if they choose to take very little in guaranteed money, or Gettleman gives them all big contracts with half the money guaranteed. Both options are highly unlikely and we all know it.

What in the world makes you think that Gettleman won't pay top dollar or near it for a homegrown player who is one of the best in the league at a position that DG feels is the one of, if not the most, impactful positions on the field?

I believe I know what makes him think that.  I don't want to get banned today though, so I'll keep it to myself...

I once was drunk camping and literally yelled out "I think I can take him" in regards to fighting a bear.

So what you said obviously isn't the dumbest thing ever said, but it's a close second to me.

Nope nope, and hell nope. We need to keep trai Turner and short . Fug everyone else right now. They're the two most important pieces in the trenches  on this football team.

Gettles values the trenches.Getts said the further away from the ball you are the less value he places on that position.

KK's contract and Josh Norman's contract are two seperate entities by two primary factors: Age and How close to the line of scrimmage they play...KK is young and dominates that line.

KK is also physically and mentally projecting up where JNo is at his peak. So "allocation of resources" would be better utilized to the identifed core..which KK is definitely is a part of.

Gettles speaks of domino effects: Id rather lock up a young Trai Turner than JNO which we all would be raising hell about if we could not sign him. Again....Trai on the line..and younger which equals another part of the core.

Josh and Kawann are actually the same age relative to their contract year, Kawann is 27 and turns 28 at the end of the season and Josh was 27 entering last season turning 28 in December. The age dropoff for DTs is not nearly as steep as it is CBs but it still starts around 30. Kawann has likely just started his peak and will then likely start to decline in about 3 years.
