The Boston Globe Thinks This Is Star's Last Year in Carolina

I think Star is here with us beyond 2017 only at the right price. KK will be the priority this offseason and will probably get an extension maybe sometime in July. I know a lot of people are excited about the addition of Butler and I think he is going add great value to our already solid Dline rotation. Gettleman likes to spend his money in the trenches and star has produced so far, I really think he stays but only at the right price lets keep the Dline stacked!

This article features lazy research at best; however, there may be a shred  of truth to it.  Star is good through 2017, but then you have a situation that you must address--by 2020 you could have as much as $40m per year invested in 3 DTs. That will be about 1/4 of the cap.

Star is a 2-down DT, so he probably will not command half of what KK will get.  However, that may not be the opinion of his agent.  The market is reflecting that now, with 2-down LB and DTs sliding in the draft like RBs did a few years back.

I think we keep Star, but a part of me wonders if the east coast is his thing.  If not, the beauty of Butler is that he can play the NT and 3T as well.  Both in the same game if needed.  He is versatile, which means that he will not be subject to the same limitations Star is.

Butler was listed by many "experts" as a NT due to his size and probably his numbers at La Tech.  However, I assure you that he was always double teamed (So was KK at Purdue, which is why he slid), and that will not happen at the next level.

Am I worried about losing Star in 2 years.  Nope.  If he leaves, we save $$ and do some "resource allocation".

By the same token, in 2020, the cap will likely be astronomically higher.  At the current rate it's jumping, you might see a salary cap of nearly $200 million by then.  Still about 20%, so it doesn't make it a non-issue, but there should be some relief.

It could be that high. Add your LBs and DEs, and I see a ton of money on the front seven.   Throw in Cam's deal, and what Benjamin is likely to be making,  lotta money.

You know, the rising cap seems to be benefiting the players at "hard-to-find" positions--the wealth is not being spread across the board by any means. .  QBs, for example, will soon make $2m per game.  Pass-rushing OLBs and DEs will make $15m on average soon.
