The Boston Globe Thinks This Is Star's Last Year in Carolina

The 2-down defensive player has limited value.

Another very minor detail that stuck in my mind--When Star was drafted, he made a comment to this effect, "I guess I will be living out here for the next few years."  Not sure it meant anything, but I was put off by it a bit,   In other words, it may not be all our decision.

Interesting point. I would assume the Polynesians could have tight knit families and communities. If that is is motivation I can not fault him for it.

Yeah I saw this the other day, didn't think it really deserved the clicks what with him comparing Star to the Geno Smiths of the world.

The rationale is pretty lazy between us drafting a 3-tech, him being "outperformed" by another 3-tech, and that we signed a 1-tech that's 6 years older and who even said this could be his last year.

Well we could always draft his brother next year. Sounds like this could be a DG money issue though.

Star's actual contract;

5/22/2013: Signed a four-year, $9.605 million contract. The deal is fully guaranteed, including a $5.365 million signing bonus. 2016: $1,714,704, 2017: $6.757 million, 2018: Free Agent

The Panthers activated the 5th year of his rookie contract @ 6.75 mill which keeps him a Panther thru 2017.

If Star can stay healthy I think there's a pretty good chance we sign him long-term.  He isn't the type of penetrating TFL, sack producing guy who usually warrants an absurd contract.  He plays an important role but it's not a sexy role.  We shouldn't have to break the bank to sign him.

If Star stays healthy, there's probably honestly a better chance KK isn't here long-term.  If we can't get him signed this off-season and he has another double digit sack season, He's going to demand ludicrous money.  I don't think it's a coincidence that the DT we drafted in the 1st more closely compares to Short than Star.  If we thought we may need a Star replacement we could've drafted the Bama guy.

Could be contract related. Short has 1 year left and Star has 2. Wouldn't need to draft a potential Star replacement until next year. If KK leaves for more money we need to have his replacement ready to go.

Zero percent chance star isn't here next year as long as he is healthy. The year after? 50/50

With rbs trending it makes sense that runstuffers should start trending as a consequence. So I would put it a little higher.

Unless of course this trending is just media doing to much of the Elliott pick.

Drafting Butler has nothing to do with our plans for Star. Gettleman likes to collect hog mollies just like the Giants did when he was there. People think we drafted Butler to replace Star but really he was drafted because he was too big and athletic for Gettleman to pass up. He may very well replace Star as you can't keep everyone but that is not why we drafted him. As for KK we will sign him to a big contract. He had an unbelievable season last year and might get better.
