Upcoming Contracts "Business of Sports"

As the Panthers get past the draft and move towards camps, there is a truth that that the front office works the hardest while there is no football going on. You see some of that with the extensions given today to Armstead and Glenn. With quite a few Panthers players coming up in the next two years requiring extensions, (namely Short and Star) it is always interesting to me to understand some of the stuff that goes beyond behind the scenes especially when it comes to contract negotiations. I think this is a one part of that Gettleman let Josh Norman go was that he kept looking at the upcoming extensions and decided it was in the best interest of the club to do these sooner rather than later.

I listed to a wonderful podcast of a guy I follow on Twitter named Andrew Brandt. Andrew is a lawyer by trade and spend years in Green Bay as their Vice President of Player Finance and their General Counsel. I started following him during the lockout and CBA negotiations and he is very knowledgeable. He started a new podcast that is called the "Business of Sports".

The second podcast he interviews Tom Condon who is the agent for a TON of NFL players. He extensively talks about a few Panthers players and their contracts and what they are doing in the off-season. I particularly thought his comments on Luke Kuechly were revealing on the leverage the front office has on first round picks and the 5th year option. He talks about Luke and wanting to get the deal done in year 3 because the team can control that player through year 7 with franchise tags, and year 3 and 4 a star player is criminally underpaid. They also talk about why Suh reached the open market. I think Gettleman was worried about our young players reaching FA and not being able to lock down Norman for next year. Meaning next year we would lose Josh AND another young player due to cap issues.

I encourage you to listen to the second episode at the very least, the first episode is all right as well since he interviews Joe Banner (ExGM of Eagles Browns)

Well Condon made Bradford tons of money over the short years

He really did, for an average QB he has done excellent. I also loved that Andrew asked if they were going to give his $8 mil signing bonus money back to facilitate a trade... Condon did NOT sounds like he wanted to answer that question at all.

I wish people would pay me to get sacked like Bradford. He'll my injuries might not be as bad.
