What's the worst tragedy in Carolina Panthers football history? (offseason thread is offseason)

Well?  We're waiting..................

Haven't yet read the responses by others, but in terms of true tragedy, hands down it would have to be the Rae Carruth murder of his girlfriend and the disabilities his son suffered as a result.

[But how the boy's grandmother has responded shows that even in tragedy there can be hope and redemption.... what a woman she is.  That Scott Fowler piece in the Observer last year was amazing.]

Mills had a great career and serves as an inspiration.

I really don't consider carruth as a Panthers tragedy outside of us losing a great player. The guy was tragic and a card-carrying POS but this was off the field diabollically selfish thuggery waiting to materialize into the pure evil that we all eventually suffered (to a degree) together .

There are character issues that really are not "tragic". Unfortunate? Sure.  But character issues have to be looked at as inevitable. Just a matter of time before lazy ass, low character, me-first, mental midget douchebags are going to do something (or nothing) that hurts their organization.

Im talking to you Sean Gilbert, Jason Peter, Eric Shelton, and Dwayne Jarret.

Insofar as Panther derailment in a vacuum not related to poor drafting:

Mark Fields and the pig farmer. Maybe Fast Freddy Lane from Lane College.

The final two status quo years of the Johnny Fox era were tragic. Hands tied or mailed it in?  Don't know.  Don't care. Pure misery to see such talent spinning it's wheels.

But for THE Panther tragedy to date...  Mr. Seifert.

I really don't remember too much of the Seifert reign. Probably a coping mechanism at work.  I was present sure, and I have sufficient recall of the 90's just fine. That whole situation just smelled rotten.  I mean WTF!?  This left coast born and bred Naner is coming to Charlotte!?  Again.. WTF!?  Worse than the smell though, watching that scheme unfold in all it's dated and improperly staffed ridiculousness was gut-wrenching. The stubbornness and square peg hammering that ensued rendered the Panther's round hole splintered, scarred, and tired. Personally I just can't cloud Panther fandom with that wrinkle in time. When Seifert was ousted it was almost like the Carolina Panthers were reintroduced as an NFL expansion team.  I have chosen to tune that debacle out altogether.

George Seifert was beyond tragic. More like a professional hit than a tragedy really.

As far as football tragedies..., I've not been a fan long enough perhaps, but I'm having trouble thinking of one.

Our horrific 2010 season was redeemed by getting the #1 pick and Cam.   Sam Mills' tragic early death has turned into an amazing inspiration for the team because of the man he was.

Losing Peppers?

Losing Lee Ward?  LOL.

George Seifert times ring a bell.  Chris Weinke starting as well.

    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
    • It's a decent vid with compelling reasons for his opinion. But, my thing is is that you simply can't draft McMillan thinking he is a surefire WR1. There are questions. His 40---rightly or wrongly---will play a part. I'd think that his splits (which will speak more to his game translating to the pros in my mind) are more important.  As much as you're trying to sell us that McMillan is a don't-overthink-it-type-of-player, I wouldn't say that's the case. Workouts will play a part in all of this.  At this point, I like the thought of Tetairoa. That's as much as I can give you right now.
