Seems he was found not guilty of 1st degree murder, thus the light sentence.

"Carruth was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and using an instrument to destroy an unborn child. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison. He was found not guilty of first-degree murder, and so was spared the death penalty. Even though he didn't pull the trigger, he should've been found guilty of 1st degree murder.

There is a good thing that came out of this.

The kid is an incredible human being, and the grandmother is an absolute beast for raising him like she has.

And he's a huge Panthers fan, and a Cam fan.  That is the positive in this otherwise horrific story.
