You're Worried....Have You Really Looked at How Deep the Depth Is...?

Below is a rough chart of our defensive back situation pre/post draft, when you think about other positions on the roster and what we’ve done over the last several drafts since Gettleman’s arrival you begin to see the BIGGER picture. That bigger picture is ‘Quality Depth’, since Gettleman’s arrival we have solidified position group after position group.

 

Gettleman’s 1^st year DL was a weakness, double dip at DT (resulting in TWO pro-bowl players), 2^nd year WR exodus takes place, (KB, Funch, Brown and Ginn in free agency) Benjamin showed he was a pro-bowl caliber player, Funchess proved he will become a talent that could potentially rival Benjamin’s, Ginn is a PLAYMAKER in our system, and Brown has gotten better and better. 3^rd year offensive line is the concern, the Bell/Chandler experiment fails insert Oher (free agency), Mike Remmers via waivers iirc, Norwell (UDFA), Turner & Williams via draft and here we are again with one of the better lines in the league, Turner is a pro-bowl talent, Williams many on the staff alluded to being able to start at RT, and performed well in the pre-season at LT, and Norwell has done nothing but impress.

 

 

 

Now in the 4^th year we rescind the tag on Norman, and Gettleman looks to solidify one of the only position groups with no depth, defensive back, and to do so we bring in DB’s with size to matchup with Evans, Julio, and now this rookie in new Orleans. We draft a back-up nickel in Sanchez as Boykin is on a 1 year deal and may play himself into a contract higher than what we may be willing to match, not only that we add to the defensive line depth to 1) add insurance in case of injury, 2) in case we lose KK, or Syar (I think we’ll retain both), 3) consistent pass rush helps the DB’s, 4) DT’s that can push the pocket prevent QB’s from stepping up to avid the edge rush allowing  us to maintain the pressure from four allowing the back seven to swarm.

 

It really is amazing to me after a 12-4, 7-8-1, & 15-1 Superbowl appearance seasons and THREE STRAIGHT DIVISION TITLES (Never Before Done in the NFC South) that amateur arm chair scouts are doubting the GM that has put together a roster that has allowed the above to take place. The man is a scout by trade, and not only do we boast one of the best rosters in the NFL, we have the CAP to actually sustain it. That to me at least seems to be what’s lost in the wake and aftermath of the draft by many fans….

When you look at just the difference in the above chart not only did we got bigger, more physical, we added more speed as well (Bradberry & Sanchez), and guys who are KNOWN BALLHAWKS a theme that is consistent with our defensive philosophies, so no it wasn’t a sexy draft, it wasn’t a splashy draft, but it was a well thought out, solidify our future draft, and gentleman creating a roster to SUSTAIN success is the GMs job, With Rivera, McDermott, and Wilks coaching up the defense I look for us to continue to have one of the best defenses over the next SEVERAL years.

Main thing here is that size was added.  Thats going to be key in matchups.

Our defense is all about keeping the play infront of you and reacting quickly and making the play.  We are not asking DBs to chase recivers from one end of the feild to the other.  Big guys that can tackle are imperative.  Josh was great at this.

I'm not the least bit worried about the secondary. If anything I am concerned about OL depth but I see help coming in regards to that.

We took three turnover oriented corners-perimeter players-at a position of dire need, along with a supposed pass catching tight end 

 

It doesn't get anymore "sexy" than that if the definition put forth by the "ur just a madden player brah" contingent over the years here is to be believed.

So is "sexy" just some all encompassing generalization of everything the Panthers don't do? I'm confused now. Is every team in the league just trying to be "sexy" instead of us?

 

Odd coincidence that we all just so happened to be fans of that one singular team who does it "right."

I think sexy = highly talked about prospects on espn or nfl network.

Said it before but good lord I feel good about this draft,  the udfa signings,  and the fact that our WRs could be filled out too. Now just gotta wait till camp. Seriously looking forward to Williams' growth
