When a player doesn't fit your system

Was listening to the Getty presser where he was talking about drafting the three corners, and he brought up the fact that it doesn't matter how good a guy is, if he doesn't fit into your system then he's worthless to you... and he gave a pretty good example;

Nnamdi Asomugha, former Eagles and Raiders corner. As a Raider, the guy was a top 5 corner, played excellent man coverage. When he went to Philly, he was asked to play zone and he failed horribly.

Getty knows what he's doing, he's been evaluating talent longer than some of us have been alive. Question his actions all you want, 90% of the time you'll be wrong.

How can you not get excited after listening to him.   I love his humor but explaining how they grade players.

Can be athletic but stupid and they won't make our board and might be a great player but they don't fit our scheme or has he put in "what we do"

I love that he likes smart players.  I think smarter players are more in tune to what a team does.  Look at our locker room last year.  Jared Allen says it was the best locker room he ever played it.  I don't think it is a coincidence that most of our locker room were smart players.  I also think the smart players stay out of trouble.

Anyways, Gettleman has me convince that we did a great job on our 5 picks.

We'll see very soon.

There's always been two ideas about how to build a team (this goes for both college and the NFL): Do you choose an excellent athlete that you can mold or do you choose a guy who, might not be as athletically gifted, but fits immediately into your system. It's an interesting take on building a team, and both ways have had success over the last few years.

It's the same reason Norman will struggle in a few years. He is really not a man to man CB.

Really mind boggling thing is that if the Panthers didn't reach out to bring him in and have him be our new GM he might be out of the league entirely by now

Yup, dude was considering retiring because no teams gave him a chance while he seems to have a great football mind, and there are so many bad GM's around the league. ..

A few years I am going to look for Norman to have hard year this season. One thing that was pointed out during the Giants game was the three times they had him play man he got toasted now thanks to poorly thrown ball and a drop nothing came of it. But he gonna be asked to play man and lock down a side of the field for the money they are paying him jmho.

you mean after he leaves Washington?

I read that Washington protect their corners in there schemes more than we do.

I read where Washington plays mostly Cover 2 and Cover 3.

If that's true, Norman will be fine.

If that's true then that was a good choice by Josh and he should be fine. With that said the skins just paid for a CB  lock down money not to cover OBJ in the slot.

Couldn't agree with Gettleman more. I listened to this whole presser and just nodded in agreement with everything he said. I think the most revealing part was where Gettleman talked about how dangerous free agents are. That most are basically mercenaries and not true professionals. That they come in and do well initially, but as soon as things get tough, they shut it down, play not to get injured and wait until they can leave and start a new stint somewhere else.

Just a very interesting and honest perspective. Something not many NFL execs would be so forthcoming with. People always get upset when we don't have interest in every possible FA out there. This makes me appreciate the Free Agents we do bring in, like Oher, Tillman, Roman Harper. True pros.
