Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

I still don't understand this pick either. Should have been Dodd or Ogbah. I'll be pretty upset if we are still are lacking on edge pressure this coming season. How in gods name is anyone convinced that CJ will do any different from last year? Dont give me that playoff excuse , if hes just going to be a ghost again in the regular season.

Dodd is going to be an average DE at best in the NFL.  He was a one year wonder...who played opposite a stud in Shaq...and who tested in the bottom 20% of athleticism for an NFL DE.

Ogbah is boom or bust.  He is a one move player...who dies not have violent hands...and who leans into the OL too often and cannot create burst.  He has the tools, but is very raw.

Butler will help this DL more than either of these guys.

People keep claiming our DTs got tired as a defense of this pick.

only thing that stood out was despite elite DT our DE did virtually nothing for huge chunks of the season.  The DEs were the issue

"Claiming"? It was blatantly obvious. There were times were KK and Star were bent over breathing heavily through durations of the 4th. And it was known that CJ was hurt for a good part of the year and now Ealy gets to show what he can do this year after a HUGE superbowl performance.

And what the hell was Ogbah or Dodd going to do this year (or even next year)? They weren't going to impact our team this year as they were raw and it is known that DE's take a while to develop (and it's possible that Gettleman didn't think they were better than what we already have anyway). So why not take ANOTHER potential elite DT that allows us to come at teams for the whole game, not to mention have leverage when it comes to paying Star and KK? What does it matter where the pass rush comes from, as long as it constant and consistent all game.

Name me a DE available at our #30 that would've had a more significant impact than any of our starters coming into next season. Dodd was opposite of a monster Shaq Lawson. Dodd has some work to do to be above average. Ogbah is quite raw with limited moves. He'd need a few years to push himself up. We have some decent young DE's as it is on this team anyhow. I'm fine with a healthy CJ and Ealy being the two starters. Butler makes a more significant impact with the possibilities he brings to the table. And yes, as said above, when you see big men breathing hard, it's best to suspect that they're at least a little bit winded. I'll link you to an article of mine that'll give a lil' taste of what the Butler ordered. He'll have a much more significant impact than any DE we would've drafted to just be buried down in the depth chart.

He should play better considering he hopefully won't miss over half season and the preseason with a hamstring injury.

Did you not read any of the replies since you asked the same exact thing on page 1? Every response has given numerous examples of why the pick was made, and showed exactly how this would improve the team, both short term and in the future.

Excellent examples given by all of you who responded. I'm going to add a different angle. If it has been discussed elsewhere, I apologize. Just haven't seen it brought up in this thread.

We recently execised Star's 5th year option. At the end of that season(2017), Star will be 28. As good as he has been, his has had issues with health and will be at an age where you don't really want to throw a 5-Year contract at him. Assuming we lock up KK, it will be tough to sign Star as well. Butler is that rare breed who can be effective at either DT spot. Butler will be entering his 3rd year, and it might just be more fiscally responsible to let Star walk. Just today, Elway did not exercise the 5th year option on Sly Williams. Even at just 6.7M. His reason was that he didn't want that 6.7M to be the starting point of negotiations, because NTs don't make that much. Now I realize that Star is more than just a NT, but their is similarities.

Just another angle I was running through my head. Not to mention that if either KK or Star got injured, we would have a backup starting, And even worse, your 4th DT is playing those 40-45% of snaps discussed earlier.

Initially I was a bit put off with the idea that we'd be using our first round pick as a backup and worried he may not see the field often enough. Also felt that a DE would have been more important to us immediately and in the long term (replacing CJ). BUT I totally understand the talent this guy has and it should absolutely impact our Dline positively. He is extremely talented, skilled and has those off the chart type traits that Gettleman likes with room to grow on the field as well.
